The Bible says that human history is 6000-8000 years old. It doesn't say the earth is that old. Genesis 1:1 is best translated:
In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth became void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep."
It allows for the earth and the universe to be much, much older. It is my belief that God created the universe and the earth. Then, there was war in heaven that ended up devastating the earth. [Think large meteor that destroyed the dinosaurs.]
There are many Christians (myself included) that believe that the six days of creation are God's days, not our days. Since He created the universe, He also created time as we understand it. He would, therefore, stand outside of time, dwelling in His own dimension of time, which operates separately. Thus, six days in His time could be as many years as He wanted them to be for us.
I believe in taking the Bible literally, but we must guard against introducing our own biases into understanding it. I think that is what has been done in the past and what continues to happen. I have yet to see a scientific discovery that conflicts with anything in the Bible. If anything, statements in the Bible were often way ahead of their time in understanding science.
