Since I havent studied the bible in a few years its hard for me to find verses etc.

Im a little overwhelmed by all the responses. I will try to reply to the most important ones.

First I will say, that lots of you have different beliefs. You cant even figure out your own beliefs, so its very difficult to discuss them.

How do you know what parts of the bible are metaphorical analogies etcetera? you dont. bible doesnt tell you. As science progresses and proves things in the bible wrong, people change their beliefs to conform with it. Thats what you all are doing. You tell me; where does the bible say this? thats not meant to be taken literaly. That was written by pagans. That isnt what god wanted it to be, it got lost in translation. etcetera etcetera. Basically the bible doesnt say much of anything, just believe in jesus or burn.

How am I suppose to debate my opinion when you can even get yours straight. From what you have said the bible means nothing and can be disregarded. All that matters is the story of jesus.

This book obviously couldnt possibly be from an omnimax god who wanted us all to read it. Theirs nothing great about it to be honest, modern men can write something similar and and wiser than this in a short period of time. Humans could have easily written it and said it was gods word; and you have nothing to disprove that is wasnt. Theirs go that belief.

How can I prove that the universe is not young and made by magic just for humans?

This is kind of ridiculus, every one who studies modern science knows that the earth is billions of years older than humans, it was not created just for us thats just silly and narcacistic. Also why would god make a 2 billion bedroom house and only use 1 bedroom? that obviously is illogical.

Free will is illogical, and imcompatible with a omniscient and benvolent god. If god knows every thing thats right for you and knows every hair on your head and every thing you think, he obviously would know what is best for every one and would make them that way. Making them any way else would just make the world worse and cause pain and suffering, and since he is benvolent he wouldnt do that. A omnipotent god doesnt need any thing since he is complete.

I know its hard for you, but just think about how stupid this is. Billions of people and animals will get tortured by some god forever? For making alot of stupid mistakes some of which are natural and some of which can caused by mental illness, or for survival etcetera? You should pray to god that this isnt true or our reality will be about 100 times worse than what science says it is.

If you want to use hitler as an example, why not use the example our loving god has given us in the bible?

He flooded the whole world killing nearly every human land animal bird and lots of sea creatures. Hitler was the leader of a group that killed 6 million people. That isnt nothing compared to what the god of the bible does. He killed millions and is going to torture billions of people for all eternity for some reason.

The same way you know the genre of any text - by looking at when it was written, by whom, and looking for cultural clues in the text.

That's not what anyone's said. For example, all Christians agree that Genesis is true and that it can teach us a lot about ourselves, we just disagree about whether it is also accurate history.

Perhaps so, but the fact is that God does speak to people through the bible: its value doesn't lie in whether or not it is factually accurate, its value lies in whether or not is leads us to to God. The bible is just a means to an end. Most of it could be factually completely wrong and it wouldn't make one iota of difference.

He would if denying freewill is worse than a bit of limited suffering. Does a belevolent parent stop their children taking any risks? No, because they have to take risks to learn, and stopping them learning is worse than allowing the risk. Likewise for God.

A omnipotent god doesnt need any thing since he is complete.

To create is part of his nature.

Well, He could do that by taking away our free will, but would you want that?
