  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi all. What does everyone here think of Heavy Metal? Is it Satanic? I know there are bands like Black Sabbath and Led Zepplin that worship the devil, but is it still okay to listen to them? What are some other good metal bands? Any christian bands?
I'm not a big fan of Heavy metal. Zeppelin - I dont really consider them metal, I love them, and they do not worship the devil thats just a false rumor. The only metal band I really like is Dreamtheater, they are just phenomenal.

Led Zeppelin? Metal? uh... sure... whatever you say man... and I didn't hear anything about them being devil-worshippers...

anyhoo, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Apocalyptica, and Symphony X are good bands to start off with. Dream Theater has a lot of good stuff too.

A note on Apocalyptica: They don't have lyrics. None. They don't have guitars or drums. They use cellos with some distortion, I think. But they're still metal...

The whole Zep-black magic thing was really part of the mystery that surrounded the band, and I'd bet that it was done to hype mostly, just like Black Sabbath (yes, believe it not). There are very few outwardly Satanic (as in Church of Satan, Anton LeVey-type stuff) bands out there, and most of them aren't even touched by the mainstream. There's a lot more anti-Christianity bands out there, but even they aren't all that paid attention to either, because MTV and the Top 40 people don't like to stir religious controversy unless they absolutely *have* to, and usually then it's probably false anyway.

Technically, Led Zeppelin is considered to be classic Heavy Metal. I think when most people say 'Heavy Metal' they're talking about bands like Iron Maiden or Judas Priest or (dare I say it) Def Leppard, which are part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Those bands stripped away all the blues influences from their music, which was part of what typified Heavy Metal in the first place, since Zep and Sabbath had basically started to just get more bluesy than metal. The fact that the blues is stripped away is probably the fact it's not correct to call it 'Heavy Metal' anymore, even though that may just be because Metal has fragmented so much in the past 35 years since it originated...

They scare me...and I listen to Industrial music (all forms of it).

If you want to try out the style I just mentioned above (Industrial) there's a few Christian artists to check out, mainly Mortal, Circle of Dust, Klank, and Celldweller. If you're wanting secular Industrial: Skinny Puppy, Orgy, Rammstein, Vast (actually, Vast is Goth-Industrial, but they're still really good), Stabbing Westward, and Nine Inch Nails are all good places to start. One word of caution though-Industrial and Goth music is full of religious symbolism that you can't always take at face value. Most of the time it requires interpretation (what are they really trying to say? what is the context of the statement? are they really meaning what they're saying?).

If I had to pick (from a Christian perspective) the best songs from each of the secular bands I just named, they'd be:

Skinny Puppy - There's a lot, but notably -'Assimilate', 'Worlock', 'Convulsion', 'Morpheus Laughing', 'I'mmortal', 'Empte', and 'Use Less'

Orgy - 'Blue Monday' (a cover of the New Order song), 'Fiction (Dreams In Digital)', 'Opticon', 'Eyes/Radio/Lies', 'Faces' and especially the ballad 'Eva' [yes, I know all but one of these is from their second album; admittedly, what else I've heard of their first album (aside from the 'Blue Monday' cover) I didn't really like, and the third album, well, it just doesn't live up to the second; although, the songs 'Inside My Head', 'Pure' and 'Leave Me Out' are very good-I'd just recommend getting the clean version if you don't like hearing profanities (aside from one at the beginning of 'Inside My Head', both that song and 'Pure' have no cursing; 'Leave Me Out', however, has the f-word in the chorus, so it's up to your discretion, really, but the song is really catchy]

Rammstein - 'Du Hast', 'Engel' (always the German versions of those two songs-the English ones are not correct translations and they just sound plain stupid), 'Ich Will', 'Schwarzes Glas' (this one's a demo; I think you can only find it on the P2P networks, since I don't think the single it *might* have been released on is even produced anymore, and even so you'd probably still have to import it from Germany), 'Feuerräder' (same deal with the previous song; it's a somewhat hard-to-find demo), 'Halleluja' (this was on the Resident Evil movie soundtrack; it also has very strange lyrics, and I can't really figure out what they're trying to say-and I've seen translations, but I also speak German and still can't figure out what they mean), and 'Links 2, 3, 4'. Obviously, if you don't mind hearing songs sung in German, then give it a shot.

Stabbing Westward - 'What Do I Have To Do?', 'Haunting Me', 'Angel', 'Sleep' (this one strikes a chord in sort of the same way Aerosmith's song 'Janie's Got A Gun' does, except for the happy(?) ending; it's speaking out against the same thing anyway), 'Torn Apart' (excellent song), 'Darkest Days', 'Desperate Now', 'Sometimes It Hurts' and 'How Can I Hold On'

Nine Inch Nails - 'Head Like A Hole' (before someone objects, it's talking about capitalism, not religion), 'We're In This Together', 'Down In It', and 'The Perfect Drug' (maybe even 'Deep' from the Tomb Raider soundtrack, *maybe*)

Vast - 'Free', 'Touched', 'I Don't Have Anything', and 'My TV And You'

This may actually seem somewhat strange, but the Sarah McLachlan song 'Fear' is very dark and would fit in nicely with the music I listed above. I almost made a fool of myself by attributing that song to someone else, just because I made a mistake in correctly identifying the artist. If anyone has seen me talk about Switchblade Symphony and refer to a song called 'Fear'-I made a mistake. It took me a few months to realize it, but I erred. Switchblade Symphony does have a song called 'Fear', but the lyrics are totally different.

Black Sabbath are not Satanic either. There is a world of differance between imagry and intent. Jus the same way that Mortis isn't realy a Goblin.

As for Cradle of Filth, Danny is so dinky and cute with his rabid addiction to Camomile tea - bless.

Once stayed at a farm/holiday home where CoF had stayed. Locals thought very highly of them (as people, they thought he music sucked) but still joke about Danny going into the pub and asking for Camomile Tea.

there is no way tht zep is metal or evan satanic. as qyote said there arnt many demonic metal bands out there, but most metaal bands do have demonic songs like the number of the beast, dAnce of death - maiden, etc,

some awesome metal bands ar iron maiden - run to the hills, aces high, judas priest - living after midnight, touch of evil, metallica rock, bleeding through r an awesome death metal band. some good melodic metal would b sonata arctica, angra, avantasia.

hey is AC/DC Classed as metal or hard rock?

I don't really listen to heavy stuff too much anymore, but from time to time it's just what the doctor ordered. If you want something on the sludgier side of heavy music (Black Sabbath-style) I'd suggest Kyuss, Sleep, and Fu Manchu. Other faves of mine are Judas Priest (especially their 70s output), Iron Maiden, Motorhead, or Metallica (1980s material only, please!)

Why won't it let me post to external sites?
You don't have enough posts. It's in the rules somewhere, check the bottom of the CF page.

I can't believe that someone presented Nine Inch Nails.:D That band makes me (and I would argue that they made me) want to get down and make love to many, many women.

Metallica (1980s material only, please!)
HAHA, I couldn't agree more!
I highly recommend Dream Theater and Iron Maiden. I know that I am not alone in this.

As for Led Zep. Jimmy Page was highly involved in parts of the occult. The band itself was notorious for their wild partying and seafood skills.

I believe their hard rock; and that all music is based on interpretation. There just happen to be a few lost souls out there that want to discredit another individuals artistic views---I happen to enjoy Marilyn Manson, after attending a show of his my out look on his musical creativity and what he has to say have completely changed my outlook.
