Anyone else put off by this in liturgical music? I know the Russians like to use it a lot, but it doesn't sound right to me at all. It is beautiful, but I mean it doesn't sound right to use in liturgy.
I love it, personally. A bit of heaven on earth!Anyone else put off by this in liturgical music? I know the Russians like to use it a lot, but it doesn't sound right to me at all. It is beautiful, but I mean it doesn't sound right to use in liturgy.

They couldn't really be the same piece, harmony requires a different arrangement by definition. They can have the same words, but they're very different musical accompaniment to those words.I'm musically illiterate, though I have a good ear and voice. I'd need to hear the same piece with and without to grasp the difference.
It's beautiful, no doubt, but it feels like the musical equivalent to Western style iconography. It's too passionate for me, it captures too much of the composer's personal and subjective emotional interpretation of a hymn.I love it, personally. A bit of heaven on earth!

Ok. I'd consider the song you posted to be more of a choral setting. Perhaps that is what you are thinking of when you say harmony?Well I can't detect it unless there are more parts then.
I get "This video is not available".Definitely prefer the second one, though I don't know that you'll find that type of arrangement in a typical parish it normally would be much more simple.
