Lol. I didnt quite follow the direction i was given for making charcoal and i learned a hard lesson. I read that the charcoal needs to be kept in a sealed container until it completely cools, but i didnt do that, i went out a few hours after i originally confirmed that it did turn into charcoal and i wanted to see if it had cooled enough to put it into a storage container. It was still very much hot and so i removed the lid so it would cool faster. I got some much needed sleep and afterward i checked the charcoal again and to my dismay i saw that all my charcoal was nothing more than a small pile of ashes on the bottom of the can. It apparently smoldered away while i was sleeping. Lol, all part of the learning curve i suppose.

Made me another batch of charcoal today. This time i let it cool a little and then dumped it inside a large metal box that i have and closed the lid. Hopefully it will cool down inside without burning up like the last batch. I'm making a third one right now. I have a lot of wood i need to get rid of so this should be a good solution.

I would very much like to learn to do this. It would be great if local communities of Christian preppers could get together on weekends and teach other these things.

Ah yes, the family gathered around the warm hum of a dehydrator.
Bananas, carrots, broccoli, mushrooms.... the pantry filled with wonderful and strange mixes of odors. Banana and carrots?

I hope people like vegetables!

We are making blends of dehydrated items which you put in a jar. Just add the mix to water, let it warm until rehydrated, and add spices. Nice quick veggie soup. Throw in some noodles maybe.
Yum...

Just randomly...I dont know why you call people who do such things by the name of 'preppers' sorry it just sounds like 'preppies' kinda odd and not a word I heard of before.

I would just think they being normal and probably live in the countryside where they need to do such things with their harvest. Its not like we have all this abundant food and then waste it by not preserving it.

Repacked some dent corn last night. The mylar just did not look right. Usually if you seal food within a mylar bag with an oxygen absorber the absorber will suck all the oxygen out of the bag, reducing the air content in the bag by 16%. This causes the bag to have the look of a vacuum pack. These bags did not have this look to them...
Opening the bags up the oxygen absorber were all hard, meaning they had fully absorbed to their limit. Mush have had holes in these or something. We repacked the corn into food saver bags with an oxygen absorber.

I prefer grits to corn mush. lol

Also, when we seal dry goods, such as corn, rice, etc., we also use a moisture absorber.
Where do you get these?

I buy mine on ebay. They are basically a small pack, like an O2 absorber, filled with a type of clay or another moisture absorbing material. Just do a search on there for moisture absorbers.

The only problem we have encountered with storing corn, even dehydrated corn, is mold. That moisture content has to be below 5%. Nothing worse than opening up a jar of dehydrated corn that smells like old socks, or as some put it, a dirty dishtowel. We just repackaged some dent corn because we did not like the way the mylar bags looked. We are putting corn in food saver bags so we can inspect the contents as we go.

I know what you mean. I live in the hot, very humid South (US). I usually double the recommended number of moisture absorbers for that reason.

Did some prepping today. Bought a 50 pound bag of rolled oats. Astounding 80,000 calories. About 40 days worth of calories. Also some toilet paper... an often neglected prep by many. Going to Sam's club this weekend. May do a little more prepping. We will set up and test our solar oven this weekend.
Moving along.

Actually discovered that the WalMart brand of rolled oats is cheaper than the 50 pound from Honeyville.
Walmart is 6 cents an ounce.
Honeyville is almost 8 cents an ounce.

We needed some fruit to go with that oatmeal... so we got the special freeze dried from Emergency Essentials... currently at half price. 6 #10 cans for $99 bucks. Regular price is $202.

Packed away some grits and oats this weekend. We bought some rolled oats in bulk (50 pounds for $65) only to find them cheaper at Walmart (50 pounds for $54) = (22 - 2 pd 10 oz boxes @ $2.42 each). Much easier to vacuum pack and store away. The 50 pound bag is rough. You have to measure and and pack with a scoop and funnel. The small 2 pound 10 oz packages you can just dump the entire pack into into a bag and seal it up. Live and learn.

Did some prepping tonight. 2 boxes of Hershey's Cocoa Powder. There are some things that you will not be able to find in the post Poop Hits the Fan world... one of them is Cocoa. Also things like baking soda, baking powder, salt, sugar, spices, pasta, etc, etc, Basically if you cannot grow it or make it... then prep it.
We opened some rice that we packed away over three years ago. Good as gold. It was in Mylar with an O2 absorber. It was great.

I may have to ship some stuff down to Belize. My bigger concern is with my daughters in the US. They do not have anything backed up.
Praying for you and those kids.
