For more than 150 years, geologists have been aware of ‘missing’ layers of rock from the Earth’s geological record. Up to one billion years appear to have been erased in what’s known as the Great Unconformity. Many theories to explain this have been proposed…

So did you read the linked article which gives three geologically plausible potential answers?

The problem was first identified in the 1840s, and proved to be particularly challenging for Charles Darwin. He called it "inexplicable" and lamented in On the Origin of Species "…the difficulty of assigning any good reason for the absence of vast piles of strata rich in fossils beneath the Cambrian system is very great".

I favor a great reset.
There have been numerous unconformities in various different places. Due to plate tectonics some land masses rise or fall relative to other land masses due to fault motion and displacement. The sea level also rose and fell with ice age - warming cycles. These things are studied in field and structural geology classes at some universities. The Himalaya Mtns. are rising an inch per year. The Sea of Galilee Basin sank 600 feet due to its location in a pull apart basin and tension in the earth’s crust. The Dead Sea Rift sank more to become the lowest place on earth.

Perhaps God wiped away all trace of prior civilization.

And reset the planet…

The scriptures teach that here soon God will recreate the earth, and there's evidence in scripture that this has happened before. It is just one big flat tapestry He's dealing with after all. It's like resetting a large table.

It is missing from most of the surface of the Earth, but not all. There are relatively "new" geologic periods that have been made due to those missing eras being filled in. Perhaps the most famous is the Ediacaran. It is named for the area where strata of that age were first found, the Ediacara hills of Australia. The life it has is complex, but without any hard parts, which makes fossilization even more rare than normal.

I see that some possible explanations have already been given. The problem is that it is hard to know the cause of something when the vast majority of the evidence is missing.

No, there is no sign or reason to believe in past civilizations. And I gave an example of a period that has filled it in a bit. Do you need more?

You should try to learn why we are very very very certain that there were no civilizations then.
