As the hour nears for bed I dim the lights and put on a relaxing piece. Sometimes its jazz or French cafe. Tonight I’ve opted for Rachmaninov.

My head finds the pillow and I nestle under the duvet. Feeling the soft linen against my skin as the air conditioner hums. As the music plays I’m struck by its beauty and recall the things I’ve encountered today. Snippets of joy, laughter, and tidbits to aid my work.

I’m surrounded by beauty and have the privilege of sharing the same. A morsel of peace in their busy day. A ray of hope when all seems lost. I’m blessed to be one of them. God’s ambassador’s.

She replied that her mother used to make her walk with a book balanced on her head. Also, girls who are trained in ballet often possess excellent posture and poise.

Book Balancing: A History on Posture

According to several historical references, the practice of book balancing dates back multiple centuries, back to royal figures and a heavily weighted class system. Those of upper status – especially women – were meant to walk gracefully, almost as though they were gliding across the floor. (Paired with a long dress and the women practically floated.) This “gliding” showed they were proper, knew how to behave like a lady, and would make for a respectable wife – at least at the time. Therefore, it was engrained at a young age that book balancing must be mastered.

I love a tranquil aesthetic. Lots of white, soft hues, and ambiance. I like an elegant environment that imparts a woman’s touch. Small courtesies you wouldn’t consider that transform the space.

Like the seating area in the elegant home tour. Few would do the same. But it’s a wonderful nook for reading or a cup of tea while the meal is cooking.

That was a common technique long ago. Dance was another avenue for achieving it. Slouching was frowned upon and we were told to stand up straight. Corsets contributed to good posture too. They kept you erect and produced a lovely line.
