We had the exact same thing with our 5yo daughter. She was either scared, thirsty, not tired....etc...and the constant struggle was exhausting for everyone. We even moved her bed from her own room into her little sister's room so they could share and help her not be so scared. That worked only a little. Finally we told that if she was good and stayed in her bed for an entire month (and we did a daily countdown on the calendar) that we would take her to Chuck E. Cheese with a friend of her choice. It was a big deal to her since it's not someplace we go very often at all and it worked great for us. Since we made it a whole month, it gave her enough time to really adjust to staying there and even now months later she may tell us she wants out, but she stays put unless we let her get up, but usually she stays in bed and falls asleep on her own now - whew!
