What do the scriptures say?
Revelation 14:12 (KJV)
12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.
No one was ever saved or ever will be saved by keeping the Law. The Law is a "schoolamaster", "the strength of sin is the Law" (it shows us how we sin because not a single one of us mere mortal human beings has ever kept it perfectly) we have all fallen short of the glory of God and all our righteous deeds are as filthy rags. Only Christ has perfectly kept the Law and is the sinless, spotless Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world.
The perfect Law of God, His Holy and righteous standards, silence us and stop our mouths before Him. We cannot and dare not go about to "establish our own righteousness", or Christ will be "of no effect" to us. Christ alone perfectly fulfilled God's Law, which is why He is "the end of the Law for all who believe" and place their faith in His finished work, His once and for all, perfect and entirely sufficient sacrifice for sin.
If we add our own works, grace is no more grace. (Unmerited favour).
Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, it is a gift, entirely unearned and undeserved.
Hebrews 11 is wonderful to confirm that all throughout Scripture, living a life pleasing to God is not about self-effort, but faith.
