  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

For years the statement of......

So diversity is a good thing unless it leads to bad behavior? I can get behind that. Let there be diverse beliefs, languages, lifestyles, etc but all working to get along.

That is the hope.

If there is freedom from constraints of traditional cultures in America, then there must be freedom from American culture (whatever that is), therefore people are free to embrace and celebrate their own cultures or whatever culture they wish to celebrate/embrace.

People are free to "celebrate" whatever they want; that is the nice thing about this country. It does not mean that the rest of the country is obligated to embrace it though.....

As long as they don't annoy others with their cultural carrying-on's.

So we have the freedom to do anything as long as we don't annoy anyone? I'm annoyed by country music, steakhouses, reality television, fast food, and bananas...I hope I'm first in the queue to get these annoying things stopped.

I've been annoyed by bananas too. Not the bananas exactly but by the fruit flies. Not one to be easily victimized by these little beggars I keep the bananas on the porch. No more annoyance. :D

Nice porch! Did you do all that sawing yourself, or buy in the wood pre-chopped?

It depends...there are two kinds of diversity.

A nation can be a melting pot... or a tossed salad.
I know that that's a familiar slogan, but it seems fair to say. And the so-called "diversity" that our government and society is pushing is of the second variety.

The reason that many people are opposed to this push is precisely because it no longer is a matter of achieving the 'melting pot' that so many Americans used to speak of with pride.

Is there any good example that it ever did ?

America has never been really a melting pot where we all turn into this homogeneous goo, it's more a mythology created in some peoples heads to minimize certain narratives about America (Usually to imply that WASP is the default way to be American, and others are merely absorbed into that). One of the things I've been interested in has been the experience of Asian-Americans (I guess because I am a Sinophile). They have never fully "melted" into the goo to which you speak, for many reasons, and yet its hard to minimize their contribution to American culture and society.

I disagree. While the melting pot analogy is not perfect, and a uniform goo is not part of the American ideal, being an American was the dream of most immigrants from an earlier era--to do what Americans do, even to the point of taking on American names.

Today, many but not all want primarily to live better, period. Many second and third generation immigrant families prefer to continue speaking something other than English, feel that the country they or their parents came from remains "my country," and actively resist becoming anything but (fill in nation of origin) people who have moved to a new locale.

so nobody cares if you're offended about other people's cultures or how they celebrate them. That's Trump's world, right?

If you are going to find some reason to critique diversity, you're going to have to look elsewhere outside the Bible.
Everyone in the Bible is white. Surely know that. White, blonde haired and blue eyed.

Nice porch! Did you do all that sawing yourself, or buy in the wood pre-chopped?

I cut this wood each spring. I get a permit to cut in the State Forest where I hunt. $15/5 cords of standing dead or fallen trees only, no live trees. I use a cordless Oregon chain saw (love it). I also buy a cord of split oak each year. I burn the ones I cut whole as 'topper' logs. Makes a great fire. I load the wood into the back seat of my car. Five or six trips and I've got my wood for the next winter. Heats the whole house and the apartment above.
