The problem with both geocentric and heliocentric models is it has even the nearest stars moving at many times the speed of light in their orbit of either the Earth or Sun.
Heliocentrism is simply that the Sun is the center of our Solar System, not the center of the galaxy or the universe. Our neighboring star systems orbit the same thing our system does - the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy.

Really, I'm just an ordinary person. I have been in the Navy, worked on radar, radio, and microwave relay systems. Admittedly things that most people haven't done. But it just amazes me (and all my friends, relatives and fellow workers ) to even think that there are people who don't know that the earth is a globe, much less that they would even think that the earth was some flat disc and all the other just plain silly flat earth notions. Maybe someone who lived on a very flat land area, had never been more than a few miles from his home and had never been to school nor had ever studied geography.....maybe. LOL.

About the space pictures. Flat Earthers say they were made in Hollywood !

Other things to consider with the speed of rotation of the earth:
(1) The speed is more or less constant.
(2) The size of the earth.
(3) Look at it from an RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) viewpoint.
The earth makes 1 Revolution in 24 hours.
Figure out how that works in RPM's
(About the same speed as the hour hand on a 24 hour analog clock.)

Nah - the flat-earthers are somewhat more sophisticated than that. They have this notion of "orbit" of satellites and the moon being them traveling in circles above the flat earth. (I cringe at what the math is behind those orbital mechanics)

I have come across those who take the universe as revolving around our sun.

Actually, that varies depending on your latitude. At the poles that velocity is zero.

Yeah, it's like you live in the North pole or the penguins are your neighbors and that's why you can't feel the pull. Think smart.

The only real "proof" the Earth is a globe are the NASA photos. And thinking folk who realise NASA faked the moon landings ask why they should believe NASA didn't fake anything else.

In your navy experience, had you some instruments to measure distances (especially on clear nights), you may have realised you could see things further than trignometry calculates the curvature on a globe Earth would allow (which is not infinity on a flat Earth, due to perspective and the atmosphere).

Malcolm Bowden absolutely destroys the myth of heliocentricity (he's got some websites, some books and some Youtube videos). He still believes the Earth to be a ball.

Flat Earth theory simply uses the same irrefutable evidence as that presented by Malcolm, and takes it a step further. Rejecting NASA's lies about photos of ball-Earth (or is it pear-Earth, or oblate-spheroid Earth?) from outer space, there is no reason to believe Earth is a ball (or a pear, or an oblate-spheroid).

the "ball earth" was proven by the ancient Greeks and they had even calculated the size of the ball (within about 10%) as far back as 200 bc.

What on earth do you do with satellites? They orbit the earth. You can't "orbit" a flat earth. You can even see the curvature of the earth from an airplane if you are up high enough. And speaking of air travel, what about people who have traveled around the world?

If you can't believe observational evidence, I'm not sure what you can believe.

Easy: the [entire outside world|government|society|Democrats|Illuminati] is a giant conspiracy to persecute [you|Christians|racists|Republicans|fuzzy bunny rabbits] and turn us all into [Communists|sheep|atheists|fascist anarchists*|jaywalkers]. Given the kind of perfect marginalized high and self-righteousness that comes with being convinced you have been personally gifted with secret knowledge, why would you care if that supposedly deeply held belief is completely and utterly insane?

*I could be The Walrus; I'd still have to bum rides off of people.

The whole thing stems from what I'm increasingly being convinced is a profoundly pathological hatred of any kind of outside authority that doesn't reduce down to a narcissistic, solipsistic rant at one's own dysfunctional upbringing or personal demons. So any Church authority that's not dreamt up by the individual is just as wrong and evil as the government (because let's be honest, this kind of thinking does rely on believing the government to be actively evil). Sadly, it's my experiences with certain family members in real life that back that assertion up, not this thread - and even they aren't nutty enough to be spouting Flat Earth nonsense.

It is too bizarre for me to fathom how someone can deny clear and pervasive available evidence for an obvious truth. Wow.

With all due respects, and as a bit of friendly advice , do not ever mention the words "flat earth" to anyone who is in active duty or has ever been in the navy unless you want to get some questionable or dirty looks.

Also, under normal conditions - no unusual atmospheric effects, etc - the distance to the horizon will be the limiting factor on visual sightings, line of sight radio communications , some types of radars, and some types of microwave repeater systems... To name just a few. The distance will be greater the higher the observer or antenna is above the surface of the land or sea. This is due to the curvature of the earth because the earth is a globe.

There have been ample proofs and evidences that the earth is a globe long befote NASA came into being. And absolutely none of a flat earth.

Apparently a spurious, out-of-context take on some bible verse ... that is taken as Gospel.

You can orbit a flat Earth, as easily as you can circumnavigate it. An orbit is accomplished in 1 plane, not 2.

You can travel around a flat Earth, as easily as you can circumscribe a plate.

When next you journey in a plane, when the plane is at height and level, notice that you can observe the horizon (at eye level without looking downward), out of both windows (or in 3 directions, if you're the pilot). This is demonstration there is no curvature observable.

The best evidence of a flat Earth is level water. It was a belief held by many ancient and wise societies.

The phenomena you describe is not unique to ball-Earth theory, so can't logically be used as evidence of the same over flat-Earth theory.

Remember, ball-Earth, like evolution, is only a theory.

You can't "prove' something, by assuming that which you are trying to prove. The lengths of the shadows could also have been used by Eratosthenes to calculate a distance of several hundred miles to the sun, had he assumed a flat Earth (but this would not have *proved* the Earth is flat).
