But don’t have anything to do with stupid arguments about [the shape of the Earth]. And stay away from disagreements and quarrels about the [the shape of the Earth]. Such arguments are useless and senseless. (CEV)
Brilliant. You ignore the fact that the scripture specifies what kind of argument it refers to (
foolish arguments) and you leave out what it specifically speaks about (
genealogies, and legal squabbles); then you input what
you think it speaks about (
the shape of the Earth).
Then NLT shows up and disagrees with you:
Do not get involved in
foolish discussions about
spiritual pedigrees or in quarrels and fights about obedience to
Jewish laws.
These things are useless and a waste of time. (NLT)
Now when you understand the entire context of Titus 3, a chapter in a book written by Paul to a
likely non-Jew (Titus), encouraging him with the good news of salvation extended to the gentiles (no longer Jews alone), you'll understand better the sense of the scripture above.
Titus 1:10,
For there are many rebellious people, full of
meaningless talk and deception, especially those of the
circumcision group (Jewish rite). (NIV)
But as is expected you've spoken out of lack of understanding; and if anything, have mostly been the one oddly interested in my
spiritual pedigree.
2 Cor 10:5
casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ
arguments = reasoning hostile to the Christian faith
exalts itself = to be lifted up with pride
knowledge of God = general Christian knowledge, things lawful and unlawful for Christians and moral wisdom such as seen in right living
So, with this understanding 2 Cor 10:5 is saying:
we should cast down any prideful reasoning that is hostile to the Christian faith and goes against our basic understanding of Christianity and argues in a way that goes against the way we should act as Christians.
This is all blind interpretation which projects itself in the guise of having understanding; when all that's needed sometimes is to be patient and read through other versions of scripture for better clarity.
Here: 2 Corinthians 10:5,
We destroy
every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their
rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. (NLT)
Science particularly takes God out of the picture and tells you
earth was formed out of a big bang, and humans (created in the image of God),
emanated from apes. Now, unless apes were made in the image of God, I don't see how that aligns.
I especially like this other version:
We are destroying
speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. (NASB)
