The repentance will come to some quickly, some longer, some not at all, you have to remember this is all GOD's work not ours and HE calls, who he calls. It's all about making them aware of the sins against GOD, to open up their conscience only then, when they realize what they have done will repentance come about.

Well if he calls people they are not seeking him out, they are chosen.

Sorry, don't fully grasp what you mean, chosen. The elect are people who are called chosen and faithful, we are told. We are also told many are called but few are chosen. So some will not make it past being called.

The Bible says unless a person believes in Jesus Christ as their Lord and saviour they are separated from God.

How exactly does this faith in Christ come about, from scripture. "Soul winners" will knock on people's door or go out street preaching the message "believe in Jesus" and I agree faith is needed. The question is: How do we do that? Specifically how can a lost person get faith in Jesus?
Faith is a gift of God. We get faith by the Holy Ghost making alive our dead and depraved heart. The Holy Ghost operates through the foolishness of preaching, through scripture and through the sharing of faith by believers.

Faith and belief are used interchangeably. However, the New Testament does recognize that people can have false faith or incomplete belief, which is inadequate. The difference is not between the two words but between the concepts of intellectual belief/knowledge that God is the creator ... followed by a wholehearted commitment. Faith is a gift from God. Our faith is increased the more we study His Word and spend time with Him.

Specifically how can a lost person get faith in Jesus?

One asks the Lord to forgive them and asks Him to come into their life ... then study His Word (or vice versa) and learn all about Him .... faith increases as one's knowledge about Him increases.

Faith, salvation.

Does God choose you or is it a partnership?
GOD calls people first. Some except the call others do not so, only those who except the call and move forward in faith and acceptance of GOD's promises will be chosen.

Are you saying faith is a gift that saves,by itself, then things are added to make us stronger or are you saying there is a multitude of things at work assisting the gift of faith?

It's a choice. I know that sounds too simple but biblically that's what faith is. A choice to believe.

Ok but even if they want to accept the call how do they get faith. We have the Bible, can't we find the details there?

Faith is the gift of God (Ephesians 2:8) that is given through the efficacious Means of Grace: Word and Sacrament (Romans 10:17).

I have actually spoken on romans 10:17 in this very thread in post 21 Lutheran friend Faith: How does a person get it.

Hope that's alright. :)

Right,I know it sounds simple,it sounds very simple. What we are exploring are the details on how it is done from scripture. Could you tell us how it is done from scripture because I cannot?

Okay let me try and simplify faith. Everyday in your life you put you faith into things and people. In other words you trust their word to you, like a doctor, you put trust in your brakes on the car etc. Well when you read the word of GOD their are things in their that prove GOD is who HE says HE is. Once you accept that you put all your faith in GOD and HIS word.

Two points in regard to that scripture.

1) If you believe that a person must hear the gospel to be saved, what happens to unborn people that die in the womb?

2) I interpret Romans 10:18 to mean all people have heard Gods word by his creation so the gospel is not necessary in every single case of salvation, only the saving grace of God is. If you disagree with scripture interpretation, what is your counterargument?

From the Lutheran perspective this is a discussion between the "Ordered Power" or "Ordered Means" of God in contrast to the "Absolute Power" or "Absolute Means" of God. Luther himself addresses this--and, in fact, exactly in the context of miscarriages--and uses the story of Daniel's three companions in the fiery furnace to illustrate this distinction. Namely, that by God's ordered power and means, fire burns; and yet the fire in the fiery furnace didn't so much as singe a single hair on Daniel's companions--this because of God's absolute power.

As Christians we are called to confess God's ordered power and means--for this reason we preach the Gospel, administer the Sacraments, because of what God has said to us through the Scriptures concerning these as His Means of Grace. This does not mean that we get to dictate to God what He can and cannot do--for by God's absolute power He may do whatever He so pleases. Thus when we speak of God's revealed means and the necessity thereof--for example that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of Christ, and it is through this gift of faith that we are freely justified by God's grace on account of Christ's all-sufficient work--we are not saying that everyone who has never heard the Gospel is damned. We do not mean that unbaptized infants are damned. We do not mean that children lost in miscarriage or through a tragic accident in childbirth are damned. We are not daring to speak of God's absolute power, His absolute means, His absolute will and what He shall ultimately do--we speak instead of what God has said to us, and given us. That Christ has charged the Church with the preaching of the word, and that this word is living and active, it is not inert, but actually causes to be what it promises: That this preaching of the Gospel actually results in conversion. Not through the will of man, not through the ability of man, but by the ordered power of God through His own Gospel word to sinners, God accomplishes that which He has promised.

Thus here through God's ordered means of grace, Word and Sacrament, God accomplishes that which He has promised to accomplish.

Outside of that, that is a matter of God's absolute power and means, and we leave that entirely to God. Believing and trusting in His mercy, grace, justice, and kindness as He has shown Himself to be.

Isn't that different for everybody? I sought the truth. Strange things started to happen and at some point I believed the Bible was true. I got home one day from work realizing I was on my way to destruction. I prayed to God for forgiveness and I got born again.

Basically three things need to happen:

1. Start to believe the Bible is true. This understanding can come about in different ways.
2. Understanding you are lost.
3. Give your life to Jesus

Each of us is given the measure of faith "For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith."

And faith comes by hearing hearing by the word of God... thats it. Christ is real.. that word is alive. One has to work their faith. With out faith its impossible to please God. He calls those things that be not as though they were...faith. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. We must work our faith. So surprised how this is not talked about more. Much if it gets tossed at some GROUP yet the word of God is so clear on it. Like asking the Father for the holy Spirit <---shhhh. Yet John 3:16? TELL THE WORLD! Yet both Luke 13 John 3:16 go hand in hand. If its written.. believe it.. do it. He can't lie

JJ I read through your post and I see nowhere in any of that scripture or even close that it gives instructions to or for a non-believer to get faith in Christ. Being an evangelist and giving the lost a Commandment to have faith in Christ without details how to do it is worthless.

Ok, the OP question was: Quote: Faith, How does a person get it?

My 1st posted scripture answered that question here:

Rom 12:3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

(MY ANSWER: Please reread the last line in Rom 12:3: God has given everyone a measure of faith. We can choose to appropriate/seize God's promises with it, or not)

I'll add some additional related verses:

Rom 10:17 faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
(MY NOTE HERE: Our God given measure of Faith increases when seek God & study/ingest God's word/scripture.

My 1st reply stated via my note (Gal 2:16 placed TWICE). As to faith in what.

I'll be more specific here:

1 Cor 15:

1Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;

2By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
(Vs 1-2 NOTE: The Apostle say's the gospel/good news that he preached & these believers in Corinth received/believed & as as a result of their faith were saved is: See next Note)

3For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

4And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
(Vs 3-4 NOTE: Christ died for their sins (Paying sins required wage) was buried (proof Jesus died) & after 3 days Christ rose from the grave (Jesus resurrection is the Fathers receipt, sin payment received & accepted. Also see Rom 10:8-17)
