  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The First Amendment of the US Constitution clearly states: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.
Do you know what this means, in the simplest terms?
It means that the US Government must do one of two things:
  1. If one religious text/icon is put in governmental building or in the area of a government building, they must allow other religious texts/icons on or in the building as well or,
  2. They will not allow ANY religious texts/icons on or in a government building.
This is to show that they are not living in a society that is governed a religious group but is one that is governed by the people. Pure and simple.
Savy?

I agree with what you are saying but actually the first amendment is specific to a "law". Thus, ambiguous muddy waters.

How would you feel if your Parliment posted the Ten Commandments on your courthouse lawn, scientist?

First off: I'm not a scientist, or whatever messed up definition of scientist your petty, insignificant brain came up with to make you feel better about your ridiculous belief.
I'm a historian by hobby and a writer by trade.

Secondly, if the British government did decide to post the Ten Commandments in Parliament (that is the correct way of spelling it), I would view as an unnecessary move.

The point still stands though, right?
Right, especially these days where there are numerous other religions practiced in the U.S., which is much different from the founding fathers perspective.

First off: I'm not a scientist,
Fair enough.

You could have ... and did ... fool me.

Do you feel qualified to use one of their inventions ... the scientific method ... in critiquing the Bible?

If so, do you mind if I compliment you by bestowing you with the title of "scientist"?

I thought I said "on the lawn" -- not "in the building"?

Wow. You really are a special kind of person, aren't you? (And I certainly do not mean that in a nice way)

If so, do you mind if I compliment you by bestowing you with the title of "scientist"?
I thought I said "on the lawn" -- not "in the building"?

Only the Scottish Parliament has what can be called a lawn. The Welsh and English Parliaments are just.... buildings.

Whatever.

I'm impressed with your ability to avoid answering a simple question.

For the record, I think you'd make a dynamite scientist.

Have you ever consider persuing that craft?

I did answer the question.
Here's my reply again: if the British government did decide to post the Ten Commandments in Parliament (that is the correct way of spelling it), I would view as an unnecessary move.

Although if you say I'm avoiding answering the question, maybe I should just become a Baptist then. I could never get a straight answer from them on simple questions.

Yes and yes even.

We plebians get your science in Greek and Latin.

That's enough tongues to confuse us.

Even though Aramaic, Hebrew, Greek and Latin were the original languages of the Bible, you'd be against that... because you wouldn't be able to understand it.
What if we went with a pentagonal-shaped block with the Ten Commandments written in all of those languages, as well as English. Would you be against it then?

That reminds me of a thread I once started where I asked which would be harder:

A scientist sitting in a church, or a Christian working in a laboratory?

Something like that.
