Evolution becomes theory, theory becomes word (Word becomes guide)

Ok.

I sort of get what it is like for you: you reconstruct a response, that at some point is homogeneous with everything else you believe.

So, if at some point your theory was forced to take a back seat, you would have only fragments of understanding to go by.

(ps. schizophrenia is not a curse, if you make more sense in the end)

I think you nailed it.

It's funny that it takes a special kind of discretion to reply meaningfully.

I found your post quite coherent, better than my own - even.

Speaking as a former teacher, there are some things that you need to establish as fact quickly and move on, otherwise you risk miring the whole curriculum debating something that's actually irrelevant to the subject being taught and the outcomes you want for them.

Questioning evolution in science class is like questioning the origin and history of the English language during an a poetry class. It's actually irrelevant to what's being taught and would only mire the class in irrelevant discussion and debate.

Yet, if the idea that English resulted from a one-off cataclysmic event in the Levant about ~4500 years ago that created all languages was as popular as the rejection of evolution is, I'd bet there would be English teachers that would precis their classes the same way.

It isn't about words. Its about understanding processes. I think this is a hangup religious people have with science in general. They operate on authority and the words of authority. Even when they speak of understanding they are doing it under the umbrella of the authority of the holy spirit and of god. This is why they fixate on definitions and people like Dawkins or Hawking instead of engaging the ideas they bring up. To them, that's how knowledge works and once you learn something from a "master" then it can't change or it's wrong.

That's not how science works. Ultimately, it doesn't matter what Dawkins or Gould or Kimura or Hawking say so much as what they can show and demonstrate and compare and contrast to previous knowledge. They all have their opinions and they are all various degrees of wrong just like everyone else. What matters is how it compares to knowledge we've accumulated through observation of reality through time.

Just for the record, I did not actually question "Evolution".

Any theory made with words has to have a working component.

I was merely asking what that component was.

I'm sorry, but that question doesn't make sense.

I'll take what Solomon said over any academian any day of the week.

You saw sagacious Solomon
You know what came of him
To him, complexities seemed plain
He cursed the hour that gave birth to him
And saw that everything was vain
How great and wise was Solomon
The world, however, did not wait
But soon observed what followed on
It's wisdom that had brought him to this state
How fortunate the man with none

You saw courageous Caesar next
You know what he became
They deified him in his life
Then had him murdered just the same
And as they raised the fatal knife
How loud he cried "you too my son!"
The world, however, did not wait
But soon observed what followed on
It's courage that had brought him to that state
How fortunate the man with none

You heard of honest Socrates
The man who never lied
They weren't so grateful as you'd think
Instead the rulers fixed to have him tried
And handed him the poisoned drink
How honest was the people's noble son
The world, however, did not wait
But soon observed what followed on
It's honesty that brought him to that state
How fortunate the man with none

Here you can see respectable folk
Keeping to God's own laws
So far he hasn't taken heed
You who sit safe and warm indoors
Help to relieve out bitter need
How virtuously we had begun
The world, however, did not wait
But soon observed what followed on
It's fear of God that brought us to that state
How fortunate the man with none

And now we see a scientist
Steeped in all his pride
Doing what he does best
And polluting us with Thalidomide

And if that wasn't good enough
Because of what came after
He built an O-ring, solid and tough
That killed seven people at NASA

You'd think they'd learn from time to time
And do something right for a change
But fame and fortune beckons them
To work on something strange

Stop bringing these up! They have nothing to do with evolution, so this is just trolling at this point.

Don't read too deeply into it, Gottservant just skipped out on his meds again. That's not a joke, he's mentioned needing to take medications relating to mental processes before. He must have been keeping up with the pills until recently, since I haven't seen him on here in a while.

Is, since the theory still exists, and there are multiple factors that contribute to evolution. Genetic drift, mutation, and natural selection are the most common ones discussed on here, with occassional references to sexual selection.
