  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Am not sure that the characterisation as "islamic FM" is correct. Is FM OK when it is practiced by non-muslims? Or is it always bad?
I think it's more accurate to call it an African practice than an Islamic one.
I did not watch the video. Wheeler creeps me out for some reason. But there has been much discussion of the girls from Minnesota that got cut in Detroit.

Neither the Minnesota community the girls came from or the doctors involved are Islamic or from Africa. They are from a fringe Hindu sect based in India.

End it how? Education campaigns? Trade embargos? Air strikes? Land invasions?
We can always do like we did to Rwanda when their genocide was going on - the Hutus and Tutsies hacking each other with machetes - stop selling them tanks and jet fighters.

It's illegal already in US and those found to practice it are prosecuted. Does it need to be extra double illegal?
only in 26 states is it illegal.

The current prevalence of FGM in the US is uncertain. In early 2014, Equality Now campaigned with survivor activist Jaha Dukureh – who started a change.org petition that received more than 220,000 signatures, – Representatives Joseph Crowley (D-NY) and Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), and The Guardian to get the Obama Administration to conduct a new prevalence study into the current scope of FGM in the U.S. as the first step towards its elimination.[5] Released in early 2016, the report showed that 513,000 girls and women were either affected - or at risk of undergoing FGM in the U.S.

From the Wikipedia link you provided:

Performing FGM on anyone under the age of 18 became illegal in the U.S. in 1997 with the Federal Prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation Act.

So I repeat, does it need to be super double illegal?

By state law. There is also a US federal law against it. That covers all 50 plus all territories and districts.

Let's go for a twofer.....

....and Judeo-Christian male mutilation...!

Male Genital Mutilation, or circumcision, is not an exclusively Judeo-Christian custom either.

It is widely practiced within Islam, but has cultural roots going far back - thousands of years before Christ and Abraham. It is found as a cultural practice in many parts of the world, including among many African traditions, and even among aboriginal Australians and polynesians. In many of these cases it is not linked to any religious ritual.

An interesting quote from Wikipedia (Circumcision - Wikipedia): "Circumcision did not become a common medical procedure in the Anglophone world until the late 19th century. At that time, British and American doctors began recommending it primarily as a deterrent to masturbation. Prior to the 20th century, masturbation was believed to be the cause of a wide range of physical and mental illnesses including epilepsy, paralysis, impotence, gonorrhea, tuberculosis, feeblemindedness, and insanity." (This section cites Darby, Robert (Spring 2003). "The Masturbation Taboo and the Rise of Routine Male Circumcision: A Review of the Historiography". Journal of Social History. 36 (3): 737–757; Gollaher (2001), ch. 4, From Ritual to Science, pp. 73–108;Bullough, Vern L.; Bonnie Bullough (1994). Human Sexuality: An Encyclopedia. New York: Garland. p. 425; and Conrad, Peter; Joseph W. Schneider (1992). Deviance and Medicalization: From Badness to Sickness. Philadelphia: Temple University Press. p. 212.)

Perhaps the discussion should delink the subject from religion altogether.

Impossible, since the Holy Books of both Judaism and Christianity link it to the Covenant with God.

"Circumcision did not become a common medical procedure in the Anglophone world until the late 19th century. At that time, British and American doctors began recommending it primarily as a deterrent to masturbation.
the Big M was not considered to be a problem until a theologian in the 16th century said it was and his ideas spread thruought the civilized western world. The Taboo has been primarily on theological grounds; however there is no prohibition against it in scripture. And that is somewhat surprizing due to the fact that it was a regular religious practice of the Egyptians during Israel's time there. It is depicted on many hieroglyphs.

Impossible, since the Holy Books of both Judaism and Christianity link it to the Covenant with God.

For many who are not Jewish, the link to religion does not really exist. Paul very clearly de-linked it from the New Covenant for Christians, even if some denominations continue to practice it. Paul uses it as a symbol of a deeper truth - circumcision of the heart - as a sign of sanctified life, and in doing so made clear that physical circumcision was not an issue under the New Covenant.

Galatians 5:6
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.

Galatians 6:15
Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation.

Paul very clearly de-linked it from the New Covenant for Christians,
He only de-linked it from Gentile Christians, and that was based on the decision of the first Jerusalem council in Acts 15. But right afterward, he circ's Timothy, at about the same time he writes in Galatians that anyone who receives circumcision is obligated to the WHOLE LAW. Tim was Jewish from his mother.

Please note that later on he was being pressured to circ Titus as well, but he did not since he was NOT Jewish.
