The number is really irrelevant. Even Covenant theologians, such as Hodge or Birkhof, have identified 4 to 5 dispensations. It's what the dispensations represent that causes the divisions, as well as their demonstration that the church and national Israel are separate, each with their own set of promises to be fulfilled.
