The AP reduced a one hour speech down to less than two minutes. And they want everyone to judge the president on that cherry-picked little bit of video. I think that's unfair and dishonest. But it's typical of what the anti-trump media does. Fox News is apparently the only news source who will let the American people see the president's whole speech unfiltered.

Did Fox news play the crowd hurling insults and flipping the bird at Jim Acosta? It was something right of the "In The Flesh" scene in Pink Floyd's The Wall.

President Trump was speaking off-the-cuff. It should not be treated otherwise.

When Trump is speaking off the cuff we should treat him as if he isn't telling the truth? Got it. Thanks, Trump supporters.

You are absolutely correct. Can you imagine how sickened I was when Obama then sent his spokesperson out in front of people to claim that there were, in fact, 57 states because some states should be counted twice? It was terrible. Then Obama just kept saying there were 57 states and then accused Fox News of being fake news and lying to the American people.
:)
Well, that is a statement that says there are 57 states.

But of course that is not to be held against him. Not HIM!

For him, every alibi imaginable will be used, including saying it wasn't what he meant and that it was just a misstatement. None of that is permitted in Trumps case. If Trump had said the exact same thing, he would have been called an idiot, a threat to democracy, and a liar for a week until they found something else to focus on.

President Trump was speaking off-the-cuff. It should not be treated otherwise.

But the media doesn't play fair with Trump.
When Obama said he had campaigned in 57 states the reporters laughed and he still didn't get what he had said. However, later the same day......

At a later stop that day, according to a Los Angeles Times blog post, Obama was talking with reporters and expressed concern he'd also mis-stated the number of potential cyclone victims in Burma. Obama said he hoped he’d said 100,000 people the first time instead of 100 million. "I understand I said there were 57 states today," Obama said. "It's a sign that my numeracy is getting a little, uh." At that point, the Times blog said, an aide cut Obama off and ushered journalists out.

https://www.politifact.com/texas/article/2011/nov/30/perry-recaps-obamas-57-states-remark/

Personally I think he may have meant 47 states because he said......
I’ve now been in 57 states. I think one left to go. Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit, but my staff would not justify it."

And that makes 50.

But that doesn't matter, he still flubbed up. Just as Gov. Perry said voting age was 21 instead of 18. Usually when people lie it's because they think they have something to gain. Neither Obama nor Perry were lying because there was no purpose, no gain in making either statement. Neither misspoken number would make a difference in the points that they were each making.

And so it is with most of Trumps supposed "lies," too.

That's why the hypocrisy sticks in the craw of both the president's supporters and people who just plain value fairness.

If they are just 'flub ups' why can't he admit it like Obama and Perry did and others have before them? Why does Sarah Sanders have to be so careful to make excuses? Why can't she just say that groceries wasn't a good analogy?

That's not true. Most of his lies are not misstatements or slips of the tongue. In fact many of them are in his Tweets. Of course none of this changes the fact that he doulbles down on them instead of just admitting he wrong.

Many of them are not flub ups; they are straightout false accusations against him. You cannot apologize for a flub up unless it IS a flub up.

For example, he has been accused a thousand times of having said that Mexicans are rapists. He never said that, so how can you expect him to say he did I not really mean it?

And you have read here on CF that he supposedly said that the KKK are good people. He never said that either, so we are not dealing with flub ups in these which are among the most often cited examples of him allegedly lying when it was the accusation which was was the lie.

And then there are other claims of lies that are so intentionally misrepresented that it would be absurd and demeaning for him to call them flub ups. If you or I or he say "I'm the best golfer around!," everyone in the world knows, yes knows, that it is a joke, a grand exaggeration people make in a lighthearted manner.

http://thehill.com/homenews/adminis...ing-mexican-immigrants-rapists-was-peanuts-in
"When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best, they're not sending you, "They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us,” he continued. “They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."

And when called to task on that he, shockingly, doubled down instead of merely saying, "I didn't mean to suggest they were rapists".

"And you remember what I said? They’re sending, I mentioned words — I won’t even mention them tonight because there’s a lot of young people here — but I mentioned words and everyone thought it was wonderful.

“And then about two days later and people said, ‘did he say this, did he say that?' Guess what, what I said is peanuts compared to what turns out to be the truth. It’s peanuts.”

And you have read here on CF that he supposedly said that the KKK are good people. He never said that either...

Excuse me, they didn't put themselves down as neo-Nazis, and you had some very bad people in that group. But you also had people that were very fine people on both sides. You had people in that group – excuse me, excuse me. I saw the same pictures as you did. You had people in that group that were there to protest the taking down, of to them, a very, very important statue and the renaming of a park from Robert E. Lee to another name.

Right, like when he claimed the US received 200 bodies of soldiers, when the number was 0. That doesn't make a difference in the point he's making.

Like when he said it shouldn't be a big deal to enact photo ID for voting because you need photo ID for groceries, when you really don't. That doesn't make a difference in the point he's making.

Like when he wanted to restrict Muslim's from entering the country, and he claimed he saw "thousands and thousands" of Muslims cheering on the rooftops in Jersey City as the towers fell. That doesn't make a difference in the point he's making.

Like when he claimed he had the largest electoral college victory since Reagan, when Bush, Clinton, and Obama all had larger electoral college victories than he did. That doesn't make a difference in the point he's making.

Like when he said he'd release his taxes later, but then never released his taxes. That doesn't make a difference in the point he's making.

Why do you think "lying" was put in quotes in the title of this thread? If hypocrisy truly stuck in the craw of the president's supporters, they would cough it up, spit it out and admit that Donald made a mistake instead of twisting themselves into knots trying to come up with reasons for why people need photo id to buy groceries - which was stated baldly, without qualification.

However, whatbogsends' post just above sums it up perfectly - Donald misstates facts and reality all the time - he says anything he wants because he doesn't care whether what he says is actually true or not. If it sounds good, if it makes his point, he'll state it.

Remember when he made up the trade deficit number to Justin Trudeau's face? And then kept insisting to his face that he, Donald, was correct when, as he later admitted, he didn't bother to learn (he has pre-meeting briefings with his aides available with pertinent facts on flashcards) the real numbers which were, as Trudeau stated, Canada had the deficit, not the US.

....those are "supposed lies"

I wonder how long Trump supporters will continue enabling the most dishonest person ever to hold office.

But the statement on his part was accurate! People do get asked for ID when shopping in grocery stores.

If it had been a flub-up on his part, a misstatement, the follow up might have been different. But it was not.

However we can also see on this thread that even when it is shown that the President was correct, the same accusation is repeated by his critics.

 You said you studied logic. You know perfectly well that needing id for groceries is the exception, not the rule.

If it had been a flub-up on his part, a misstatement, the follow up might have been different. But it was not.
When you cool down, ask yourself why you just can't admit that the statement is wrong, especially in the context in which it was made.

However we can also see on this thread that even when it is shown that the President was correct, the same accusation is repeated by his critics.
Sure, sure.

That's because you haven't been feeding your kids beer and cigarettes.

It is common for people to be asked for ID in grocery stores and for a variety of reasons. That has already been explained.
It's far, far more common never to be, as has bee explained.

If you claim, "Dogs are brown" flat out, no qualifications, then the existence of a single yellow dogs falsifies your claim.

So, you DO know that IDs are required when checking out in grocery stores. And those are only a couple of the reasons that they are.
