President Trump wasn't lying. A photo ID is needed in Ohio for buying groceries when someone is using Food Stamps. See the following article:

Ohio House passes bill that would put ID photos on food stamp cards

Also, an ID is needed when someone buys alcohol or tobacco products when they look young.

Yes, because every single person that buys groceries lives in Ohio and is on food stamps. Every one, no exceptions, no none. Funny how he told the people of Florida that, but then, they already knew because they have to go all the way to Ohio to shop for groceries.

Better drug test them and make sure that they are not buying steak and lobster. But wait, didn’t Sarah Huckabee Sanders say beer and wine are groceries? I thought you could not buy beer and wine with food stamps? Is the law different in Ohio? Why does the President approve of this? Is it time for more Spin? I think it is

More spin, more spin.

This appears to have been in effect less than a year. I live in Ohio and wasn't aware of it.

The lengths that people have to go to justify and make sense of the Presidents nonsensical remarks is mindboggling. They just can’t admit that he appears to not be as smart as he led us to be.

I would guess about 35% of Americans get carded. All SNAP buyers have photo ID, those that purchase with checks, sometimes credit card holders get ID'd, and those that buy alcohol.
We all know about the last of those situations, but I was thinking that the rest of those instances called for photo IDs, too.

However, when I Googled the question to be sure, I couldn't find the answers, although I found entries for what looked like every media outlet in the country reporting, in the first line, that Trump "wrongly" or "falsely" said that people have to present ID when they buy at the grocery store--even with the several sources normally considered to be conservative. We don't seem to have newspapers anymore; we just have editorialists.

He was lying - you can buy groceries without a photo id, even in Ohio - all you need is cash.
I think rather that someones bluff was called. If you are carded for using a check or buying with SNAP or its equivalent, that's "buying groceries."

So the White House seems to assume that if you add unspoken caveats, you can make untrue statements true.

"You need ID to be groceries." <<if those groceries are alcohol or tobacco products and you look under 40>>

That leads us to the following also being true.

Cows explode at midnight. <<if you strap a bunch of C4 to them and add a timer set to detonate at 12 AM>>

Water flows uphill. <<if you stand at bottom and shoot it up the hill with a firehose>>

You don't need air to breathe. <<if you're a deep-sea tubeworm>>

I don't know if this is a form of Stockholm syndrome or something but this time period will make a great case study for psychology students years from now.

Ah! Cash! Something the banks no longer give to certain people who have demonstrated a history of financial irresponsibility. I fully understand now.

To play devils advocate, he’s not lying just demonstrating his ignorance of doing the groceries. Now if he has stated he personally went to do his groceries and ID was demanded then yes he’d be telling porkies.

That's probably more what I was thinking of though, I think it could be both. He's quite abusive with his base.

The emotional investment in Trump is now too great so to save face, his supporters, rather than admit his faults, have to try to spin every dumb thing he says or tweets into being all a part of his brilliant strategy to troll his detractors.

Didn't you know some people's favorite song goes:

You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round
You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round

If Trump had the self-confidence to say "Yeah, I tripped over my words and that was a bad example. Oops." it probably wouldn't be an issue. Some people just don't do well speaking off-the-cuff.

But quadrupling down like this, as he ALWAYS does, makes him look just plain ridiculous. And defending him by clutching at straws just highlights it in big neon letters.

Seems like it'd be really easy for someone in a position to be spokesperson to just say that he was ignorant of that because, as a really rich and powerful businessman, he never went into a grocery store.

But that would be admitting that he made a mistake, which he seems quite incapable of doing. I'm pretty sure that any member of the White House staff who said that on the record would be out of there at near-relativistic speeds.

Are you serious?? The way he combs his hair is red meat to the haters! They attack his wife for being foreign-born at the same time as they talk like they are the fast friends of every immigrant. The list is endless.

To think that what you are suggesting would actually happen is not realistic.

Well, lets also remember that he did not make a mistake in this case. The suggestion about him admitting to having made a mistake in this instance is entirely hypothetical.
