  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If I was born blind, how would you prove to me or convince me that the sun exist?
I'd attach a thermal imaging device to a working part of your brain via electrodes, and train you to 'see' (or 'hear', or 'smell', or otherwise 'sense') the Sun.

We can rebuild him. We have the technology. We can make him better than he was. Better... stronger... faster.

People with sight can't see the sun, only the light the sun puts off, much like God, we can't see him, only the affect He has on the earth.

This reminds me of God attaching a "spirit imaging device" to a working part of our brain, and training us to sense the Son. :)

Sounds a lot like virtual reality. :)

So what was the object from which this photo was taken? Could it be seen?

Use a telescope that translates photon hits on the CCD into a raised textured map that you can touch. You can adjust the the output so as to show only the temperature ranges that you want. Using the laws of gravity and other observations you can also calculate the Earth's orbit around the hot mass that you detected with your telescope. This will allow you to calculate the distance to the hot mass. You can then calculate the needed energy output that the hot mass would need in order to heat the Earth. The orbits would also give you the mass, and the telescope readings would give you the surface temps and circumference.

We could then move into neutrino release which we could also translate into the same textured map instead of a visual display. This would allow you to determine the fusion reactions occuring in the Sun along with photon bandpass filters for spectrophotometry that would allow you to determine the elemental makeup of the Sun.

Presumably like everybody else they feel the effects from the environment - where else could the heat be coming from? And presumably they can distinguish between different types of heat.

I could be wrong - but while I know blind people may wonder what "colour" and "light" are like, I have yet to hear of cases where a blind person didn't know what the sun itself was.

Boo, science.

Where's the mystery of the unknown of the unknown in all that? How unpleasant...

They say on a clear night, you can hear the sun moving overhead.

Incidently OP's question reminded me of something I read in a book: the psychologist Richard Gregory was describing the first time his patient, known as S.B. (a blind man who had his eyesight restored as an adult), saw a quarter moon. He was quite surprised - he said he had expected it to be wedge-shaped rather than a crescent.

Which, when you think about it, makes sense. After all, what does the quarter of a round cake look like? ;)

We can always translate photons into a display that a blind person can interact with using their sense of touch. Even sighted people can use instrumentation to "see" photons that are outside their visual range. You might as well ask a sighted person how they know that xrays exist, or that radiowaves exist.

Sure, objects (like cameras, radars, etc) can "see" the sun, but alas, we can not with the naked eye. If there was an object close enough and bright enough to illuminate the sun with electro-magnetic waves from the correct part of the visual spectrum, which would then be reflected into our eyes, then we could see the sun, besides that, we can only see pictures of the sun. It is a burning ball of gas. Light must be reflected off of an object, not emitted from it, in order for the object to be seen.
