Jesus wasn't teaching that the commandments would save you. Why wasn't the man saved? After all, didn't he say "all these have I observed from my youth." Surely, if he had kept all the commandments from his youth, why wouldn't he be saved? And why would he be asking the Lord Jesus Christ what he must do to inherit eternal life, if he already had it by keeping those commandments?
Jesus was demonstrating to the rich young ruler that keeping the commandments was not the way to inherit eternal life. Jesus said "Thou knowest the commandments," He did not say to the rich young ruler "this is what you have to do to inherit eternal life" In addition, Jesus was not teaching that one has to go into abject poverty to inherit eternal life. It is obvious that the possessions of this "rich young ruler" were a stumbling block for him in order to inherit eternal life. Whatever keeps one from following Jesus is a stumbling block...it doesn't necessarily have to be money, as it was in this man's case.
Salvation is the free gift of God's eternal blessing through the atonement of Jesus Christ. It is offered to all who will believe on Christ.
Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Romans 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
Romans 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Romans 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
Romans 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
Romans 3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
Romans 3:27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.
Romans 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
Romans 3:29 Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also:
Romans 3:30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.
Romans 4:3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

Romans 4:8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
Romans 4:24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
Romans 10:8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Romans 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

It is through faith ALONE and grace ALONE, not by any admixture of grace and law, faith and works.
Romans 4:13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
Romans 4:14 For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:
Romans 4:15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
Romans 4:16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
Romans 11:6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.
Man’s obedience to the commandments has never saved one soul. Salvation is not based upon what man does for God; it is based on what God has done for man.
