That's not how I use it. I don't view it as a contest, but as a way of supporting someone who posts something I like or find though-provoking.
Honestly me too, but it has been a fun thread.

Since we're on the subject, what is the rainbow or "optimistic" all about? I have never received an "optimistic" and felt good about it. Every time I get one I hear the person saying, "Well, we hope you can do better next time" or "Don't give up, you'll get there eventually." There's no positive way to take that. Or, am I misunderstanding it?

Ok I admit, mods if you ever catch me giving a rainbow effect to anyone I admit, it’s goading.

phew I checked and I only gave one, but have sufficiently repented.

I'm not goading, I just figured I'd give you one since I've never done it before (at least knowingly!) and have no real idea of its purpose anyway. :)

I view it as positive post with a hopeful outlook. It’s apropos on advice threads, the prayer wall, or any post that exemplifies the encouragement we’re meant to give.

I’ve gotten 54 and given 23. The majority are probably from those threads. :)

There should then be a sorry button and a disagree button so the full spectrum of opinions is available. Those who disagree are not being represented unless they post as such.
while we are at it a button for:
forgiving
demonising
exaggerating
overly ridiculing
satirising
disrespecting
appalling
dumbing down
over-simplifying
over-complexing
tickling one's funny bone
woking
jumping out loud enjoyable
no way amusing
overwording

Right and all those other things that should be included in a conversation.

No. That’s goading imo.

No. That’s goading imo.
I've seen "optimistic" used slightly fancifully in a "that'd be great, but I seriously doubt it" sense, as in

"Hey, maybe the Head of So and So will extend the olive branch to That Person and the centuties old-rift can be healed at last. This weekend, at the Synod!"

*optimistic*

I usually get them when speaking about something practiced in Catholicism. But oh well. I often see their point in that rating. Like NFP, etc.
