Hearts of stone change after we choose Jesus. Even if the mind is 'stony' man still can choose though, after all how else could the damned people stay damned? I think it’s safe to say that being in the flesh, having a heart of stone, and being dead all describe the same thing...being unsaved.

Yes. Hopefully we all know the answer.
In other words after we choose Jesus, we can then start living being made right.With the new hearts, with the new life, we will believe. We will please God.
Actually, the issue is what scripture says. And it says that those in the flesh cannot please God. Unregenerate folks cannot please God. Period. You can continue to ignore that, but it’s right there in Romans 8The issue is not serving or pleasing God here, the issue is choosing to do so or not. Only after we make the right choice can we begin pleasing God.
Who cares if people please God before they get saved? Of course they could not. Your attempt at equating the power of choosing between good and evil (free will) to 'pleasing God' is noted.
