  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

ok, as you may have guessed, I need help!

Im 16, and am absolutly petrified of the dentist.

and get this, I have cavities that I need to get fixed. On THURSDAY

yeh, its a few days away, but I am so scared.
I think maybe its the fact that I don't really know my dentist. We've been going to the same office for about 5 years now, but everytime I've gone, we've had a new dentist. So I think that thats why Im not comfortable with him.

I know how important it is to get these fixed, but im just too scared. I've been sitting on them for about 3 years now, and they havent gotten any bigger or escalated, but I kno that they will eventually if I don't get them taken care of.....so can someone help me out here?

What are you scared of? Just curious, im a dental assistant, and I've always been curious as to why patients are scared. You wont feel anything. It's just a filling. They take like 5 minutes to fill. The worst part, the needle, you wont barely feel because of the topical anesthesia they put on beforehand. And if the doc is good at giving shots you wont feel anything. Ask him to use a small needle and to put on topical if thats what worries you. It's really no big deal.

honestly. I can't really say why Im so scared. Not that I won't share, I just don't know.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that I don't know him or any of the other people there well at all, so I think that makes me uncomfortable.
And the fact that I know it will prolly hurt.

some more stuff added to it is the fact that my mom has had a lot of work done on her teeth and I've seen a lot of stuff that she's had done and I think that that freaks me out some too.

But its just weird, cuz even just like going into the office, I already don't like to be there, even if Im just getting a cleaning. And I don't know how you can stand the smell. It just makes me so sick.

So Im not really sure what it is. And yeh, Im a baby when it comes to needles.

O and also too, do you know if they'll let you listen to iPods when they're working? cuz we have all these new technology things and I don't see why it would, but maybe would it interfere with the tech stuff?

cuz maybe if they let me listen to it, It might ease my nerves.

thanks for your help :)

I have one filling.. way in the back.. and my dentist didn't tell me what he was doing he just kinda did it. I was slightly freaked out.. but ya know what it didn't hurt like at all.. my mouth on that side was so numb the shot didn't hurt. It was painless just all the sounds of the instruments in my mouth was weird. Best wishes.

Your ipod wont interfere with anything. It's all really low-tech to be honest. You wont feel anything at all. No pain after the anesthesia wears off either, its not surgery or anything. Ask the doc if you can listen to your ipod because it will calm you and that you are nervous, I dont see why he wouldnt let you. Besides, then you dont have to deal with all the small talk that dentists like to do with patients, expecting coherent reponses with their hands down their throat.

lol. thanks guys. this helped a lot.

It also kinda bites too that they're all in sepreate places, so if they wont do all of one side of my mouth, then I'll end up having to come and do it four times....which won't make it any better for me.

and more than likely four shots, unless its powerful stuff...

I know I'll have to go at least twice becuase if you're thinking about it, and imagine the teeth in 4 different sections, lower left, lower right, upper left, upper right, thats four shots right there pending location and stuff.
And I dunno how it happened, but I ended up with 7.
Its not that I havent been brushing well enough, I guess I could prolly do it more, but its family genes...and they suck. lol

well, I'll check back tomorrow, and then I'll write back how it goes on thursday...:prayer:

Mouth is filled with fillings back when I guzzled sugar.

Injections in your mouth don't hurt at all! :) honestly. Was worried sick too, but I never feel a thing. Unless its in the roof of your mouth, which is highly unlikely, as they only tend to do that when they pull out teeth. The injection will go into your gum, and unless you focus really hard on it, chances are you won't feel pain at all! At least, I didn't  injections on your arm etc hurt, I find gum ones don't. Though it may leave a disgusting taste in your mouth.

Fillings feel funny when they're being drilled in. After the initial uncomfortableness of "ZOMG THEY'RE DRILLING INTO MY TEETH, LISTEN TO THAT DREADFUL BUZZING NOISE" You realise it doesn't hurt at all, and you just settle back and become comfortable.

Mouth is numb but I found that fun :D doesn't hurt once its worn off, fillings are a breeze.

In short, don't be afraid of the dentist

They'll probably do two tomorrow and 2 the next visit. Unless you ask him to just do them all, I dont know how long your scheduled for or anything and most docs dont like numbing up the entire mouth, but its worth a shot. You wont be able to talk very well if your whole mouth is numbed up though. Eating will be weird. But it wears off after a few hours. You'll probably only need 2 shots. I dont know what kind of anesthesia they are using though. Considering that they will be drilling into your tooth you'll be thankful afterwards that they numbed you up. Although I've seen many patients request no anesthesia for fillings with no problems. Good luck. No biggie really. Take a nap. Thats what I always did when I went to the dentist. Or atleast acted like I was sleeping to avoid small talk.

 Yay I survived!!!!

The dentist and his assistant were so nice about it.
The assistant understood that I was scared and all and she and him walked me through it

and Alec Eiffel, be surprised, they did all of them. Yep all seven of them. I had to have five shots of novacaine.
Four for each section, and then one more on my bottom left. they were all surface 1's so they weren't that bad, but the dentist said that for some people it just takes a little extra time to get numb, so he gave me another one.

My mouth is really sore though. Which I expected, but still, its kinda annoying. And when they put the gel on my bottom right, they missed at first and hit my tounge, so Its still numb and it sucks cuz I can't taste anything!!!!! :yum: and it was banana flavored, and it didn't taste like banana, but it smelt A LOT like banana.

The shots themselves werent that bad. The only one that hurt was my bottom right. and I couldn't feel my fifth shot cuz I was already numb. But otherwise, it went way better than I thought.

so thanks everyone. I haven't really eaten anything, so Im off to go find something worthy of my new fillings!

J.j. Is cavity free!!!!!

yay!!!!:D

Well waiting was the longest part.
but overall, my appt was at like 3:30 and I didn't get outta there until about 5:30.

He said he had the time, and the assistant said that they would cut it down to two appts. but then she came back and said they were gonna do them all.

So I guess I was just scared of the unknown.

and there are only two things that are bugging me right now.

one is that my mouth is still a little sore so I cant open my mouth completely open.
and another thing is that, I had some sort of reaction the novacaine, called para....somethin????

so the tastebuds on the right side of my tounge are still numb and I can't taste anything.

but overall it was pleasant for my first time. not that the dentist is pleasant, but considering the circumstances, it went well
