Agreed. . .it was figurative and in terms of his listeners' experience.

This DBH guy is supposed to be Orthodox but I do not trust what I believe is actually a neo orthodoxy of his great intellect. Every year we focus on the Last Judgment ( it is always in focus of course) as we enter into Great Lent:

I just want to add that Hart also seems to preach a dogma of universalism which is why I am skeptical about what he says about hell. His book on universalism came up as a strong secondary topic in an Orthodox forum I frequent.

Exactly, but the Vale of Hinnom still exists and you can visit it today...so, it is a poor foundation for "hell" in my humble opinion. There are still many more reasons to not subscribe to the doctrine of eternal damnation - it does not hinge on just one passage of Scripture, all of which I have examined, but failed to find in them any convincing evidence of "hell."

Logically God can punish some as long as He can reward some.

We in the western countries are emotionally spoiled when it comes to God's attribute of Judgment. In some countries like Communist China and Russia, their police take a daily delight in committing the most horrific, painful, and unconscionable acts against the helpless who have only been accused of being a problem for the State.
I am sure suffering at the hands of the State officials for even a half an hour will remedy any negative thoughts concerning God's length of punishment time against evildoers.

I am sure suffering at the hands of the State officials for even a half an hour will remedy any negative thoughts concerning God's length of punishment time against evildoers.

When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth. God's sovereign Will is clear: that all men come to salvation in Him. Will the Will of God not prevail? The Calvinists assert that God is able to save all, but chooses not to. The Arminians counter that He would like to save all, but cannot. There is a third position, that God is both WILLING and ABLE to save all. I wrestled with this idea, and it is not too difficult to find that He is willing...but is He able? Then, one day it came to me in a flash: God is omnipotent, so OF COURSE He is able to save all. No "mental gymnastics" are required, and no overturning, negation or alteration of His Will or His Word is required, just the realization that the doctrine of eternal damnation is wrong. I could not find it in the KJV, and the "evidence" quoted by "hell" advocates is small and contradicted by many more Scriptures that I can quote all day.

Keep in mind that Jesus was speaking of the city dump, not the Hell of Dante, Milton and Mary K Baxter. He was simply telling His listeners that it was better to be born (enter life) blind or missing a limb than to live such a life that you ended up executed for some crime and be denied a decent burial, to have your dead body tossed into the dump instead. None of the four words rendered as "hell" in the KJV mean anything like the common idea of Hell, and two of those words come to us from pagan Greek mythology: hades and tartarus.
Unfortunately this post is fraught with errors.
Most of this is internet nonsense.
What a word might have meant in some other country/language in the far distant past has nothing to do with the meaning in modern English.
E.g. when we say truck in English we think of a large boxy vehicle for carrying large heavy loads. Originally "truck" meant vegetables. A truck farm was a place for growing vegetables not not big vehicles used for carrying large, heavy loads. Instead of looking for questionable information which supports ones assumptions/presuppositions might I suggest you consult reliable sources.

…..There were different groups within Judaism; Sadducees, Pharisees, Essenes etc. and there were different beliefs about resurrection, hell etc. That there were differing beliefs does not rebut, refute, change or disprove anything in this post.

The traditional explanation that a burning rubbish heap in the Valley of Hinnom south of Jerusalem gave rise to the idea of a fiery Gehenna of judgment is attributed to Rabbi David Kimhi's commentary on Psalm 27:13 (ca. A.D. 1200). He maintained that in this loathsome valley fires were kept burning perpetually to consume the filth and cadavers thrown into it. However, Strack and Billerbeck state that there is neither archaeological nor literary evidence in support of this claim, in either the earlier intertestamental or the later rabbinic sources (Hermann L. Strack and Paul Billerbeck, Kommentar zum Neuen Testament aus Talmud and Midrasch, 5 vols. [Munich: Beck, 1922-56], 4:2:1030). Also a more recent author holds a similar view (Lloyd R. Bailey, "Gehenna: The Topography of Hell," Biblical Archeologist 49 [1986]: 189.

Excavations near the Temple Mount and within the residential areas have already shown that no waste had accumulated there (Reich and Billig 2000), and thus waste must have been removed, most likely in an organized manner. The dump is located roughly 100 m outside and south-east of the Temple Mount on the eastern slope of the Kidron Valley (fig. 1), and extends at least 400 m and is 50–70 m wide. Large amounts of pottery and coins date the dump to the Early Roman period (the 1st century BCE and the 1st century CE up to the destruction of the city by the Romans in 70 CE). A preliminary study of the garbage (Bouchnik, Bar-Oz and Reich 2004; Bouchnik et al. 2005) showed the presence of animal bones.

Exactly, but the Vale of Hinnom still exists and you can visit it today...so, it is a poor foundation for "hell" in my humble opinion. There are still many more reasons to not subscribe to the doctrine of eternal damnation - it does not hinge on just one passage of Scripture, all of which I have examined, but failed to find in them any convincing evidence of "hell."
Nonsense. The valley of Hinnom/Gehenna was never used for a constantly burning trash dump.There was a valley used as trash dump near Jerusalem it was the Kidron valley. See my previous post #32 above.

Something that occurred to me recently was that for a human soul a trillion years is so close to infinity as makes no difference.
In other words even though "aionos" may not mean literal infinite duration, a punishment of a trillion years is still a very, very, very, verrrrry long time.
“aionios” occurs 72x in the N.T.
“aionios” is translated world only 5 times in the N.T.
……….….………eternal 42 times in the N.T.
……….….………everlasting 25 times in the N.T.
Jesus used “aionios” 28 times Jesus never uses “aionios” to refer something ordinary/mundane which was not/could not be “eternal.”

In twenty four [24] of the following verses aion and aionios are defined/described as eternal, everlasting, eternity etc, by paralleling or juxtaposition with other adjectives or adjectival phrases.

However, neither word is ever defined/described, by other adjectives or adjectival phrases, as meaning a period of time less than eternal, in the New Testament, as in the following verses.

In the following ten verses Jesus defines “aionios” as “eternal.”

In this verse Jesus parallels “aionios” and “aion” with “[not] snatch them out of my hand.” If “aion/aionios” means “age(s), a finite period,” that is not the opposite of “[not] snatch them out of my hand’” “Aionios life” by definition here means “eternal life.”

In Rom 1:20 Paul refers to God’s power and Godhead as “aidios.” Scholars agree “aidios” unquestionably means eternal, everlasting, unending etc. In Rom 16:26, Paul, the same writer, in the same writing, refers to God as “aionios.” Paul has used “aidios” synonymous with “aionios.” In this verse by definition “aionios” means eternal, everlasting.
[15]2 Corinthians 4:17-18
(17) For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal [aionios] weight of glory;
(18) While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal;[proskairos] but the things which are not seen are eternal [aionios]
In this passage Paul juxtaposes “aionios” with “for a moment,” vs. 4, and “temporal,” vs. 5. “Age(s)” an indeterminate finite period, it is not the opposite of “for a moment”/”temporal/temporary” “eternal” is. “Aionios” by definition here means “eternal.”
[16]2 Corinthians 5:1
(1) For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal [aionios] in the heavens.
In this verse Paul juxtaposes “aionios house” with “earthly house which is destroyed.” Is God going to replace our destroyed earthly house with a house which only lasts a little longer and will be destroyed at the end of an age? The aionios house is not destroyed, the opposite of “is destroyed.” Thus, “aionios” by definition here means “eternal.”
[17]1 Timothy 6:16
(16) Who only hath immortality, [aphthartos] dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting [aionios]
In this verse Paul paralleled “aionios” with “immortality.” If “aionios” is only a finite period, God cannot be “immortal” and only exist for a finite period at the same time. Thus “aionios” by definition means “eternal.”
[18]Galatians 6:8
(8) For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; [fthora] but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. [aionios]
In this verse Paul juxtaposes “aionios” with “corruption.” “Fleshly” people reap “corruption” but spiritual people reap “life aionios,” i.e. “not corruption.” “Age(s), a finite period, is not opposite of “corruption.” Thus “aionios life” by definition here means “eternal/everlasting life.”

But they can seek for “eternal life” and “immortality” at the same time. Thus by definition “aionios life” here means “eternal life.”

In verse 23 Peter parallels “word of God” with “imperishable.” The same writer, Peter, in the same writing 1 Peter, in verse 25 writes the word of God “endures eis ton aiona/unto eternity. ” The word of God is not a finite age long but imperishable. Thus by definition “aion” here means “eternity”
[25]1 Peter 5:10
(10) And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal [aionion] glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, [oligon] will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
In this verse Peter contrasted “aionios” with “little while” Jesus does not give His followers a finite period of glory then they eventually die. Thus “aionios” here, by definition, means “eternal.”
[26]Revelation 14:11
(11) And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever:[eis aionas aionon] and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
In this verse “aionas aionon torment” is paralleled with “no rest day or night.” If “aionas, aionon” means “a finite period” at some time they would rest, “Aionas, aionon” by definition here means “forever and forever.”

Logically God can punish some as long as He can reward some.

We in the western countries are emotionally spoiled when it comes to God's attribute of Judgment. In some countries like Communist China and Russia, their police take a daily delight in committing the most horrific, painful, and unconscionable acts against the helpless who have only been accused of being a problem for the State.
I am sure suffering at the hands of the State officials for even a half an hour will remedy any negative thoughts concerning God's length of punishment time against evildoers.

Nothing delectable about Hell, in fact, the absolute horror of that reality is virtually beyond human comprehension. However, the reality of it is backed up by the ultimate authority - God - and no degree of mental gymnastics can overturn, negate, or result in the slightest alteration of His will and His word.
There are two ways (at least two ways) to look at the Bible. Either it is a Damnationist text with a couple dozen Universalist scriptures to ignore, or it is a Universalist text with a half dozen Damnationist scriptures to ignore.

Most of this is internet nonsense.
What a word might have meant in some other country/language in the far distant past has nothing to do with the meaning in modern English.
E.g. when we say truck in English we think of a large boxy vehicle for carrying large heavy loads. Originally "truck" meant vegetables. A truck farm was a place for growing vegetables not not big vehicles used for carrying large, heavy loads. Instead of looking for questionable information which supports ones assumptions/presuppositions might I suggest you consult reliable sources.
…..According to three irrefutable Jewish sources; the Jewish Encyclopedia, Encyclopedia Judaica and the Talmud, quoted below, among the יהודים/Yehudim/ιουδαιων/Youdaion/Jews in Israel before and during the time of Jesus there was a belief in a place of everlasting torment of the wicked and they called it both sheol and gehinnom, translated hades and gehenna in the LXX and NT.
…..There were different groups within Judaism; Sadducees, Pharisees, Essenes etc. and there were different beliefs about resurrection, hell etc. That there were differing beliefs does not rebut, refute, change or disprove anything in this post.

I addressed all that in my post. What you mentioned is only one view. I highlighted in red the many references to eternal, unending "hell" which I quoted from three Jewish sources the Jewish Encyclopedia,. the Encyclopedia Judaica and the Talmud with links.
