  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well, I survived the old fashioned weekend. At the craft sale the Ladies Circle sold 2 purselettes, 5 funfur boas, 2 homespun scarves, 4 chapstick keychains, and about a dozen baby caps.None of the foilies or the 2 filet pieces sold tho' :sigh: .

Under the crochet canopy I did more teaching than demonstrating. At least 3 of the 6 chairs where filled most of the afternoon, usually it was all 6. Kids would come, try it for a while, go off to do something else and then come back. I got 3 adults started (one of them a guy! ) and one wants private lessons because other people distract her when she is trying to learn something.

One cute story from the day. Little Allison (6 yrs) was working away on her chain when mom came by with 2 yr old Niccole. Niccole climbed up in a chair and picked up a swatch that had been set down by a previous student and wanted to play too. So I went behind her and put my hands over hers to "help" her make the stitches. Two short rows later she'd had enough. A little later she came by and picked up a skein of yarn and a hook, sat down and started wrapping the yarn around the hook and trying to pull it through. Her dad wanted to stop her and I said let her be. I'd rather she learn that it is ok to play with the stuff in case later on she thinks she really wants to learn (when she is a few years older). He was worried that she would ruin the yarn, but I said she's can't tangle it any worse that my cat. It only took me 5 minutes to untangle the yarn at the end of the day, but Niccole had 15 minutes of quiet fun making the tangle. Not a bad trade off in my book.

Lol. That must've been a ton of fun.

The whole day was fun, but I spent so much time hunched over helping kids that my poor back was a mess! It is still abit stiff today, so I guess it will be extra muscle relaxers again this afternoon.

That would be too fun! And I would agree a great trade off for Niccole.... and you're right, yarn can't be hurt too much, besides it's a relatively inexpensive busy maker.

Keep up the awesome fun (and work) ;)
Amen to that!

Oh, we went to my grnadma's over the weekend and she does all kinds of needlework, except knitting I think, but that's beside the point. And she taught me how to crochet hangers. I'm almost done wih my first one, then I need to go buy some hangers. = D

I Love Doing Purses!

Do you have a pattern or just make one of your own? Do you make a bottom to it?

I made one on my own a few days ago. I just made a large rectangle and folded it over and stitched together the seems but I can't imagine it being strong enough to hold anything. Do you crochet a strap or use something else for a strap?

I kinda look of others, then do my own thing, I've made one with a bottom and about 6 without, I like the ones without better. I crochet a strap. What I do for mine is use a D or E sized hook and make the stitches as tight as well as you're comfortable doing. That helps the strength and keeps things from falling through.

I didn't put a strap on mine because I didn't think it was sturdy enough to be a purse. Instead I stuffed it and called it a cushion. I put it in our church's craft sale. A lot of people picked it up thinking it was a purse but I don't think it ever sold. If I had finished it as a purse I think it would have sold right away.

I finally finished El's shrug. Feels like it took forever, but was only two weeks! I still have to hide all my ends and toss it in the wash. El tried it on last night so I could check the sleeve length--she loves it
so that's good!
Now I am using the yarn that was left from the old fashion day thing. Not knowing how much I would need I really over bought. The church paid me for the yarn, but Lisa said to go ahead and use it for a Linus blanket. I finally found a pattern that I like. It is a stitch pattern called smooth wave in one of my Harmony guides. The colors are gold and carrot (red/orange), great for this time of year!
Last Sunday JJ and I went to Michael's while El and Hubby went to a college funds seminar. JJ picked out the yarn for his next sweater--dark sage. The sweater is in a basket weave pattern and is a Melissa Leapman pattern. I just have to get the buttons yet and get started on it. I also picked up some thread because I got this "dumb" idea to make Christmas ball covers for this year. "Dumb" because it is the end of OCT!!!!!!!!

Just got a new book and had to tell you all about it. It is Jane Snedden Peever's second Aran Sweaters book. The designs are lovely, she gives the pattern multiple in case you want to practice it first and her email address is in the back of the book in case you want to tell her your opinion on the book or you need help with something. I also have the first book, but haven't had the time to make any, yet. I have my mind on a couple of them for my daughter and one for my son. Still haven't found the "perfect" pattern for my husband--he's the fussy one!:p
