  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I just started to crochet again. I did it as a child and teenager... but for 15 years I've concentrated solely on embroidery. If you travel a lot though, embroidery is harder to take along with you, except for the simple designs and you need very good lighting, etc.
As a child I used to be quite good, even into lace crocheting (if that's the right word in English) but... for now I'm having trouble even just getting a nice flat laying straight surface... *chuckles* So... I guess I'm beginning again at the very beginning again.

Lol. I know that feeling. When I first started I wasn't overly enthused about it, so I only learned the chain, then put it away for years. taking it out every now and then(about once ever 3 or 4 or 5 months) to do a few stitches, then I'd put it away again. But recently I've really gotten into it and had fun with it. Though everyone who doesn't know how likes to tease and nit pick on(at) me. Mom likes to complain about me only doing purses and bags and such, but I like doing them and they're useful. My poppaw(whose wife crochets) thinks it's the most boring thing you could ever do. Which both myself and his wife agree that to just sit and crochet would be boring, but you can multi task and be crocheting and talking, or singing, or do it while you're listening to the preacher(though paster may think you think his sermon is boring). Point being the fun of it is you can crochet and do other stuff at the same time. He just doesn't get that.

Question... is it normal that when I begin... my chain and then my first rows sort of 'twist themselves' instead of being a nice flat surface? I seem to remember something of this being normal and just needing a bit more patience till I've made a bigger surface which would sort it out... but I don't want to be deluding myself...

The one time I know I impressed my late father in-law I was crocheting a simple oversized granny square, talking with him, reffing two kids to make sure they didn't kill each other and watching a hockey game! He was blown away that I could do all that and never look at what my hands were doing or mess up a single stitch.

If you are sure you are only working one side of your base chain for the first row then the twisting could work itself out with length. You might want to check your gauge and your stitch count as well--just to be safe.

My stitch count still is right, not sure what you mean by gauge (English isn't my first language)... I do believe I'm working only one side of the base chain, certainly from that first row of crochet on...
I do always have trouble getting the first row of crochet on the base chain... seems like it always twists and is hard to see where to put the hook in.

faerieeva,
sounds as though your beginning chain is too tight, causing itsself to twist.. You may need to use a bigger hook for your base chain. To make a nice foundation edge, always work you next row pf stitches in the 'spine' of the stitch. That's the little bar looking part of the stitch in the back. You just need to be careful to do so on each stitch, or it will twist if you are working in other parts of the stitch. Anybody's beginning chain can twist, it's a matter of paying close attention when working the foundation row, your first row of stitches. Hope this helps.

Gauge is the number of stitches per inch across the work. It is usually stated in the pattern, if you are working from one. If your tension is not even it can throw off the gauge.

If you are having trouble seeing where to put the hook in the base chain you might try using a hook one size larger than called for. This will loosen up your base chain just a bit and make it easier to work the first row with the smaller hook. A looser base may also help with your twist problem.

I think I'll need to start again... I'm on row 8... and my work curls like a rag curl...

I deliberately made my base chain VERY loose... ((It's the most lose part of the work, maybe a bit too loose?)) But I might not have put the hook through the right part of the stitch... so... if you look at a crochet stitch and you lay the chain on a flat surface you sort of see three 'strands' in the stitch. Two of them lay next to eachother, the third sort of 'under' it. In my bace chain I've put my hook in the opening in between those two 'flat laying' threads and the one underneath... is that the right place?

Good afternoon to all! I am new here to Christian Forums and I find it to be a wonderful place.:groupray: I found this section on crochet and I think it is so great that there are so many young crocheters. Some say its a lost art. not me! below is a link to a website that has helped me in so many ways with learning new stitches. I hope it helps you as much as it has helped me.
