It seems to me that if the Government forces shut downs the government should pay the workers the same as they made before the shut down. If they are going to deliberately put people out of work then they should pay. This isn't the same situation as a business needing to cut back simply based on economics. The cause of the downturn is a disease and government action.

I agree.

Hopefully, one of the lessons learned out of COVID 19 is the need to do a massive tech refresh of all government systems to enable policy makers to implement more efficient and timely unemployment aid. I would like to see national standards applied for all systems that administer Federal aid (and health care information management). That will take some massive investment at the Federal level....but the savings over the long run would be well worth it.

...now back to reality. The best systems in the world are useless if our Federal government can no longer effectively govern. Congressional leaders (specifically Senate Leader) waited until the very last moment to release a Senate bill -- two full months after the House released theirs...

Because those tax cuts went to small businesses that needed them. Your local plumber, electrician, grocery store etc.

Not that I have read but if you have data that shows this I will look at it.

All the news reports are about the big guys who never paid in the first place.

Then perhaps we should do something about that? That certainly strikes me as responsible.

I doubt we will ever see the day that the ultra wealthy pay their fare share. I keep hearing the politicians talk but regardless of what side of the isle they are on the outcome is always the same. When I was in business very little was left after taxes. Small businesses can't get away with not paying.

I don't remember what government offices it was I just remembered the outrage. I think our government is bloated. Over the years I've had to deal with the federal government and its almost impossible to get anything done.

Sounds like the one that was supposed to stop pandemics like covid.

When my spending exceeds my income I say I'm broke. I can look in my wallet and see that it's true.

All governments are experiencing a lack of revenue and the only responsible answer is to stop spending. If taxes are raised I will have to spend less.

If your spending exceeds your income, you stop giving oiut free money to everyone and try to make more income. Republican solution give more free money and cut income.

So we should just give up and throw up our hands? Or should we continue to strive to attempt a more equitable world?

Who is actually doing anything about it? Other than talk I don't see any politicians taking action.

I'm always amazed at comments like that. To my knowledge there is no cure. Are you saying they had a cure and were shut down?

I agree. They are not taking action because they are not being held accountable to take action. As long as we the people do not demand they do so they will avoid it. Even when we do demand it the lopsided political landscape in America will make it an uphill battle. I still am willing to try. How about you?

The most recent, 2018 Trump Tax Cuts lowered revenue by giving billionaires and large corporations huge tax cuts. It also increased spending and the budget deficit was increased.
Generally, if one has a deficit in their budget, the conservative measure is to first lower, then eliminate the deficit then begin working on debt. So the goal would be to increase revenue (not decrease) and/or cut spending, not increase it. The GOP did the opposite and is not fiscally conservative.

In contrast the Obama Administration did lower the deficits, which isn't a by-all, end-all but is at least a step in a conservative direction. The last time the US had a balanced budget, even with a surplus, was when Bill Clinton was president.

The sticking point is most always in what to spend money on and what can be cut.

Of course it's not only Republicans who do that. It's just a question of who the "free money" is being given to.
According to the comment it was a Republican solution.

As far as I can tell both sides approved the stimulus and had no problem with who received the money until after the fact.

I was all for the tax breaks because it helped small businesses that needed it. I can't help that the big guys took advantage of it and I don't see any democrats actually doing anything either. What democrat is speaking out about raising taxes and cutting services to balance the budget?

I don't have the option of doing anything. Not one person running for office that I know of is for tax increases and program cuts.

Almost all of them. Where the majority of the objection lies is that along with increasing taxes on the wealthy, democrats would cut spending in military/defense and payouts to large corporations like big oil.
