  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

As a church social function, no problem to have community standards. My issue is telling people they can't go to the same movie on their own. That is slightly hypocritical IMO.

Sounds like it. My problem here is that I hadn't previously heard that this is a thing with some churches.

If you want to indulge me, what actually is gained by them going to this extent...if these churches do actually show the same movie and yet don't want members of the congregation to see it on their own? The churches don't get to edit it, I'm assuming.

I've already bought tickets to 'Son of God'. I can't wait to see Roma Downey play the BVM!

Oh by the way. I'm sure there will be the scene of the thief on the cross. Mentioned to help us stay on the thread's topic :)

IMO it has more to do with Keeping Up Appearances than anything else.
Basically they are saying, OK we will do what the world does but we won't look like it.
No, the film itself cannot be edited by anyone outside of the film maker/producer.

Ok Mr. Tigger145 you need to come back here after and give us a full review. Try to recognize if it strays from the bible.

I may come back and give my 2 cents on what I thought of the movie but I really don't want to derail the thread. In fact if you want a full review you really need to watch it yourself and start a new thread because from what I've experienced biblical interpretation is through the paradigm in which it is viewed.

So true. I saw the hand of God all over, Jesus Christ, Superstar, yet I have met people who insist it was blasphemy.

Here it is for any of you young kids who didn't get to see it...

Jesus Christ Superstar - YouTube
I have to agree with this-it's been years since I viewed it but I liked it both as an unbeliever and later as a believer as well.

It was the movie that first started me wanting to know more about Jesus. I had played "church" for years, but I had no idea who Christ was.

To me, back then, it had almost the impact of today's, Passion of The Christ, by Mel Gibson.

I cried like a baby at the power of both films.

I would say that I don't mind the thread going OT (and I don't, especially after so many posts), but after trying to accommodate church government, then following the suggestion to start a new thread, it ended up being less productive I think because it went on in two places.

So I don't mind however the conversation gets OT and following whatever is being said, but if it deserves its own thread, it's probably better to start one, for the sake of the discussion itself. :)

As far as Jesus Christ Superstar, I might give it another look. You can find anything on YouTube now, can't you? I remember it came on TV when I was a kid, and I watched a few minutes of it. I had different sensibilities then, but tbh I was uncomfortable and found it irreverent in those few minutes, at best. I wouldn't have known what blasphemy was anyway. I probably saw the worst part or something.

Oh, trust me... many people right here will be instantly turned off by it. To think, actually showing Hippies as real "church-going" people.

And the scene on the river barge..... the pure depiction of homosexual debauchery will send many of our "pious" CF posters running for cover. But, those things were real then. And they are real today. And it is why Jesus came, and died.

Mary M... not being able to understand the odd-feeling love she had for this man. That, alone, will raise the blood pressure of many.

I don't remember any of that except the hippies. But I pretty much saw lots of hippies as "Jesus people" growing up, so that part wouldn't have bothered me. It was something else, but not sure what. It could have been homosexuality, if I'd seen it, since I didn't know what that was then and would have certainly seemed "not right" to me.

Like I said, I was a kid - not really sure what it was that bothered me.

Funny, I didn't like Passion of The Christ nearly as much. Just me I guess-most people seemed to rave about it.

It seems to me that Jesus spoke of salvation as a journey.
I believe so.

Matthew 24:13 "But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved."

From one old hippie to another. That song you speak of touched me as well.

Speaking of confession, I'm on my way there now. I'm going to sit down with my spiritual GP and describe the various recurring symtoms I have as well as some unique non recurring symptoms. He is well acquanted with my spiritual his5ory and is able to diagnose pretty accurately my particular ilnesses and he will give me advice on how to treat my symptoms to the point where they no longer occur.
I'm looking forward to it.
Yesssss. I love my SP (spiritual father). :) He is truly like my second father. :)
