Why is it that the atheists in this thread by an large are treating this as an example of people who call themselves Christian acting very much unlike a follower of Jesus and many of the "Christians" are treating this as though it as though it is somehow justifiable. Sometimes, on CF, I wonder if non-Christians get Jesus better than many "Christians".

To be honest, there are some atheists who are using this to point the finger at all Christians, not just the ones threating this girl. Knowing many Christians personally that would denounce this behavior, I try not to do so myself.

As to why atheists seam to get Christ's message, well the basic version of that message is very humanist in nature and make sense to those of us that think this life is all there is.

Philippians 4:8
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

The problem is that between the writing of the letter to the Philippians and some of the later epistles the early church began wrangling over questions of orthodoxy. It wasn't pretty. If you take the epistles and read them in chronological order, the level of vitriol increases exponentially. All that trash talk got preserved and handed down and became an entrenched aspect of the Christian experience. I guarantee you that a certain amount of it is going to be quoted and embroidered upon in pulpits tomorrow. Mix in a little human nature and it's no surprise that angry Christians can trash talk like WWF characters when the urge hits them and feel perfectly justified in doing so.

Yes; it's amazingly similar to the love many Christians have felt from atheists.

Nah. The ACLU was founded by the daughter of a Congregational minister and a college sociology teacher. They were both socialists. It wasn't any more "Jewish" (or not) than anything else, but it's slant was always left-wing and it took on cases defending prominent leftists and organizations like the IWW; it also defended some other swell outifts like the Ku Klux Klan.
So you admit they have a history of defending the leftist groups and right wing groups?

Is it possible that the bigger problem here is that none of us are particularly shocked any more when we hear about Christians making threats like this?

If this was a Jew or a Hindu, or Buddhist, in our society, that would be somewhat surprising, wouldn't it?

Christians, not so much.

To be moral isn't biblical, it's humane....Its universal. It existed way before the first book of the bible was written.

Realizing that this is just an attempt to discredit Christianity, please show from scripture where this sort of response would have been supported? Would Jesus have responded in this way?

If you are serious, I will reply at length to this request.

If a Jew, Hindu, or Buddhist was this hateful, I would be quite shocked.

American Christians? Not so much.

This is appalling behavior--period. And should not be tolerated. These kids need to have their toys taken away. Where are the parents, if they are approving or tolerating this, they need an attitude adjustment. Of course, thi8s is not a Christian thing to do--

and what's this garbage about a jewish agenda to destroy america??---Such an idea is beyond silly---America is about the only friend they've got and it would be suicidal of them to try and destroy america--the middle east would finally be able to blot them out---nope--don't think that's true at all.

I can't help but think of Jessica Ahlquist as she has to hear christians persecute her.

Yes the same people that believe the bible, the book that says "christians will be objects of persecution" are the very ones tormenting this young lady for standing up.

What is it that christians don't understand that we are in the minority and we (agnostic/atheist/logic) are the ones persecuted?

Make sure you give her your love and support via FB or $ etc.

They like to pretend to be persecuted because it validates their faith.

On the other hand, atheists in the US constantly receive threats of violence and death and are one of the least trusted groups of people in the US.

Funny, if I were to come out as an atheist openly, bye bye so many of my friends and social life. I may even fear for my safety in some areas of the country being an atheist. But Christians are really the ones being persecuted. Uh huh.

My man, this is why she is so brave.

Im not this brave.

If i announce my disbelief in the bible to my family and friends at work (which they for the most part know my standing now). Anyway, my fam will totally shut me out. That means my mom, dad both my brothers cuz they are all devout.

They use Matt 18:17 for their arguement. as well as other excommunication scriptures.

I lose my fam if i come out and admit Im a logical. I can't see how it's worth it. I love my fam.

How divisive something must be to destroy families. Funny how atheists are typically the ones to take the moral high ground and attempt to hold onto their religious families, meanwhile their families would disown them. Therefore, closet atheists.

I honestly fear for this girl's safety, living in this "great Christian nation".

“Do not think that I came to bring peace on Earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household. He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me. He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it.” (Matthew 10:34-39 NASB)

No thanks.

Isn't it funny how conservative Christians espouse family values and then turn around and disown their own family members? Por que?

Did Jesus/Yahweh say this?

Waitasec, is this the very same guy that condoned:

Kill everyone with religious beliefs that are different than your own. (Including your family, friends, and neighbors) Duet. 13 chapter and 17th chapter.

Kill disobedient sons Duet.21:18-21?

Cut off a woman's hand if she touches the "secrets" of a man who is fighting with her husband. "And thine eye shall not pity her." Duet 25:11,12?

How to dispose of a hated wife. Duet 22:13-22?

Ill stop there but you get my point. Apparently god doesn't change (mal. 3:6) but thank goodness (if he exist) he does or we would still be under these laws.

I get pushed aside on all these scriptures and am told i am not reading in context and not getting the overall outlook. A logical cant help but role ones eyes when told this.

I'd just prefer that you didn't act as if you were a theist. That's hypocrisy. And you'd look like a theist, and be a hypocrite. Subverting the opposition is just self-fulfilling an attack on theism.

What faith? Sorry, I don't have faith the way I know you are trying to make it out to be.

Why would act as if I am a theist? I simply keep my mouth shut about my atheism for fear of my job, livelihood, family, friendships, ect.
