Christian owning a restaurant with a bar

Ok so what's your opinion on this. If a Christian can't own a restaurant/bar. Due to the fact that there are ppl struggling with being alcoholics ect..... Then why is it Right for a Christian to own a restaurant of ANY sort? because there are many ppl struggling with being obese....

I have issues with food. But I cant go blaming it on restaurants. Since my eating problem are my responsibility. Not some restaurant owner. The same with alcohol.

Yes, we know that there are SOME Christian churches (such as the "Christian Assemblies International") that oppose alcohol completely. MOST Christian churches--as previously noted--do not.

I know things have changed a LOT in the past few decades. And I also understand "most" if you include Catholic and Orthodox. But as far as protestantism goes, Methodism and its offspring comprise the majority of Protestant worshipers; and before a few decades ago, ALL were very opposed to any form of alcohol use.

Christians can own a restaurant that has a bar attached. There's no prohibition to that. There's prohibition against becoming a drunkard. And many states have laws that govern the amount of alcohol that can be served to a person due to driving under the influence and that liability afforded the server/establishment.

Remember also that the wedding at Canaan. Jesus turned casks of water into wine. If alcohol were forbidden the wine that is tradition at Jewish weddings in that time would not have been created by God's will.

Actually if you count all the Protestant denominations like Baptists, Lutherans, Presbyterians, SDA, and Pentecostals then Methodism is really a small minority.

Those are doctrines of churches. Not the explicit teachings of Jesus. (Which have often been distorted, and even perverted by churches. And you can't deny that.) There is no condemnation of alcohol in the Bible as unequivocal as in the Koran:

O ye who believe! Strong drink and games of chance and idols and (divination by) arrows, are an abomination of Satan’s handiwork: Leave it aside in order that ye may succeed. Surah 5:90

Alcohol use is also clearly rejected by Buddhist scripture. In the Dhammika Sutta, the last of the Buddha's 5 Moral Precepts is Do Not Take Intoxicants.

I agree entirely. Having been raised in the most anti-alcohol of groups (Holiness pentecostal) I took a long hard look (via bible study) of the alcohol question when I was in high school and found only ONE VERSE in the NT that specifically commanded us to not get drunk. Sure there were plenty that told the results of drunkenness (not good) but did not COMMAND anyone to abstain from all alcohol.

Ultimately we are not held accountable for the actions of others unless we actively, intentionally steer them from the direction of GOD. People in general, hurt or in need are allowed relief through worldly substances. Allowing utter drunkenness and the possibility of lives being ended through drunk driving would need to be negated to the best of your (owner of establishment) possible abilities.

We know that Martin Luther not only drank beer, but that his wife Katharina von Bora was a brewer. Luther did, however, condem drunkeness. Among his words on the matter are the following: "God does not forbid you to drink, as do the Turks; he permits you to drink wine and beer: he does not make a law of it. You are actually wrong on both counts, maybe you need to read your church history.

1. The SDA denomination sprung up from the Great Disappointment and the Millerite movement. Pentecostals came from the Azusa Street Revival.

2. There are American Churches that are larger than the UMC; Southern Baptist Convention and the Assemblies of God to name a few.

Miller (of the Millerite disappointment) was a Holiness Methodist evangelist who predicted the return of the Lord in 1844. Ellen G White (who founded the SDA) was a disciple of his.

Pentecostalism started circa 1900 in Topeka KS at Bethel Bible school established 3 years earlier by C F Parham, a Holiness Methodist circuit preacher. Parham started another school in Texas where William Seymour enrolled as a student. He (Seymour) went on to start the Azuza St, revival in LA.

So both those movements have roots in Holiness Methodism.
