Now that the number of new people infected with the coronavirus in China is slowing down, the country's Communist Party is ratcheting up threats against the West, with a particularly nasty warning about access to life-saving drugs aimed at the United States.

In an article in Xinhua, the state-run media agency that's largely considered the mouthpiece of the party, Beijing bragged about its handling of COVID-19, a virus that originated in the city of Wuhan and has spread quickly around the world, killing nearly 5,000 people and infecting thousands more. The article also claimed that China could impose pharmaceutical export controls which would plunge America into "the mighty sea of coronavirus."

The disturbing threats made during a global pandemic as well as the scary consequences if that threat becomes real highlight just how tight China's grip is on the global supply chain. Already, the Food and Drug Administration has announced the first drug shortage related to the coronavirus. Though it did not disclose which drug was in short supply, the FDA did say it could not access enough raw components needed because they are made in China.

That doesn't come as a surprise to Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla, who told Fox News on Thursday that America is "dangerously reliant" on China for the production of critical goods, including parts for technologies needed to fight COVID-19.

China is denying that this disease originated ... in China. They have been truth impaired throughout this whole thing.

The Western world made China what it is today. Western investment, technology transfer, and blindness to China's oppressive regime have allowed China to become a great power. The Chinese are clever, resourceful, work hard and have few qualms about ripping off western ideas, patents and anything that can give them a leg up on the rest of the world.

Who did not see this coming? When will the West learn that not everyone aspires to be like us? The Middle East rejects western forms of government. Africa either rejects democracy or twists it to suit the strong man in power at the time. Pakistan is no better, Iraq is a basket case, courtesy of the West's ignorance, and India is fast becoming democratic in name only. Russia is creeping back to its old ways. Welcome to the New World Order. Not exactly what former President Bush had in mind.

We should just slowly cut our ties with China.

Start making more products in the US.
Pay a little more but, create jobs.

We should never trust a country
that wishes to take over the world.

Take one of the old Detroit auto plants, make it a pharm production facility on steroids and bring it back home. We never should have hooked up with china in the first place.

But how much you want to bet China is using this as a ploy for whatever kind of bargain. That's my guess, course that's all it is is a guess.

This is an unsurprising tactic that comes out of the notion of 'saving face', making oneself look good. We could do this...but we won't, because we are superior to you. It's a much more potent hearts and minds tool for winning the support of their own citizens than anything they might obtain from actually withholding drugs. The concerning thing would be if Trump responds in his usual clumsy fashion, denying this face-saving move, in that case Xi might feel compelled to make some kind of actual gesture that may have a more immediate impact.

Create jobs?

May not happen. When countries like USA or in Europe move home manufacturing, the factories are often highly automated (especially in Europe).

It really won't get everyone jobs. Only people with skillsets that are useful in automation - mostly engineers and programmers.

Europe is doing something entirely different about it in a future where automation woud become extensively imbedded in society. Changes like Universal BAsic income as many people would lose jobs to automation.

One thing China can be sure of - when this crisis is finally on the wane, it will be getting precious little of our pharmaceutical business. Very short-sighted of the Chinese Communists, but they're not really that bright. They should be bending over backwards to show that they remain a reliable source for critical products like this. But the writing is on the wall for them, as long as America has a leader willing to establish proper economic borders, which we at long-last do: its days of manipulating and abusing world economic relationships is over.

The problem is, I went to that article in the link on that page and couldn't find anything that even sort of looked like what they claimed was in it. :sorry:
tulc(looked quite a bit for it and never found it)
You notice the title does say 'hints' not 'explicitly lays it out for you'?
