Tonight tested my endurance.
Ah ok.Oh dear... I'm sorry. I was being a bit tongue in cheek guys. I went to the Great Canon of St. Andrew. I was talking about the content and length of the service with little kids in tow.
However, it is partially serious. I got up this morning with some rather serious thoughts that so warrant your prayers. Perhaps I'll explain them later
Does "canon" have a punitive connotation in English at all? Just wondering.
Frederica Mathewes-Green came in for the service but left before we could speak to her. My kids loved that. We watched her videos extensively when we were looking into the Orthodox Church.
We were at her son's parish since our services were earlier plus we hit Knoxville rush hour when we go to midweek services. It was really enjoyable.
Therapeutic, not punitive. Sometimes medicine is bitter.Does "canon" have a punitive connotation in English at all? Just wondering.
We heterodox Eastern Catholics have the reading of the 12 Gospels on Thursday night.
That is a long service....especially for the altar servers who have to stand throughout the whole thing.
We do that too, on Holy Thursday.
We do the opposite. We start with 12 candles unlit in the candelabra, and as each Gospel is read, we light a candle. We end having heard the 12 Gospel readings, with 12 candles burning. At your service, do you have a lighted 12 branch candelabra and after each Gospel is read, a candle is extinguished?

I never thought of that. I like it though. I thought they were a good symbolism of the Light going forth from the Gospel.Interesting. I thought that the candles being extinguished was a good symbolism of the crucifixion plunging the world into darkness as the Light of the World was put to death.
