From personal experience I believe in prophecy from God. You can use any of your gifts for good or evil. I'd personally think certain things should be kept private.
I find this too. There's a limit even to where Christian prophecy will benefit -- if information gets to public, it is subject to others' judgment and to gossip. Then we are fending off extra things in addition to the first problem.
Ok. This woman claimed to be a christian and I was only looking for someone with prophetic ability from the Holy Spirit. I was not looking for a witch by any means. We must remember that the apostles did things that seem occult like drawing lots and things of that nature. Sorry, but I was not able to determine if the pratices she was doing where occult or not. Next time Ill try harder to research but even then I cannot be sure because I cannot see the spiritual world like that.
You did what you thought was right at the time. Then you sought out more truth here from Christians, and are getting a broader set of evidence and information. That's what we humans have to do -- build on what we know to be true. God understands that we weren't born with all knowledge and wisdom. Forums are so helpful, because we can learn from each other.
I have been used by the Lord at times in corporate, at other times in personal prophecy, and that has caused people to seek me out sometimes to see if I "have a word" for them. I feel like they are wanting a psychic or shaman - someone to hear from the Lord on their behalf. We all need to learn to hear Him for ourselves, and to wait on Him. If He wants us to get something from another person, He will give it, I am confident.....
And this is important. Prophecy is very scriptural. But we can sometimes feel the pull of insecurity, where people are afraid that God won't speak to them, so they go to someone who they think will give a sure-thing message from God.
God walked with man in the Garden, spoke directly to Moses, gave Noah blueprints, chose Mary to bear Jesus, called David a man after His own heart. He is a God who likes to connect directly with people, and does not give preference to those with religious training or public influence. He worked with shepherds, fishermen, and babies.
This might be a good time to seek out a church where the prophetic gift is accepted. Instead of going to one person for one word, find a community of people who understand the whole realm, and include you in the lifestyle of watching God's giftings at work.
You might be able to find mid-week meetings or home groups, so you wouldn't need to leave your own church. If your area has a Christian newspaper or web site, you might find some meetings there. Look for keywords like
House of Prayer (HOP or IHOP), soaking, Holy Spirit, Charismatic, miracle.
I don't endorse all fellowships with these keywords, and believe that you need to watch out for some of them. But sitting in on one will give you an idea of whether to stay or move on to the next. All fellowships are different -- even from year to year.
