Do the homeless people accept the Bible when you give it to them?
Yes they do. It's part of a package of food and warm clothes.

I avoid giving them money as many have addiction problems.

Hi, I understand how important it is to read scripture everyday but I am beginning to fear that I am growing tired of reading it. It feels kind of boring and repetitive and I really hate to feel that way about it.

Any advice?

:)

What saves my Bible study from getting dull are good commentaries and character studies, as well as thematic Christian books, tackling different issues e.g those written by Philip Yancey.

A good commentary can really make the word come alive and give some shape and direction to your study. Character studies are interesting too as they often reveal as much about God as they do about the character being written about. Studying biblical characters can open up new directions, I got interested in Abraham and I’m still studying related books 2 yrs later.

Writing about what you learn in one form or another is another good way to keep yourself engaged.

I recommend reading the gospels over and over for a year. Really get to know Jesus. After you know Him this way, you can look at the Bible references quoted in the Gospels. These may take you on a journey through the OT. For example, the Sermon on the Mount leads to all sorts of places in the OT. There is a Chronological way to read Scripture, too to make it more historical.

Read the Hebrew Bible. Learn the meaning of the words. You could spend your whole life just to study and learn the meaning of one word in the Bible. Like the very first word in the Bible: Beginning. There is no beginning for God, He is the alpha and the omega and he knows the end from the beginning. In the beginning of the Bible we have the beginning of Creation. Notice how beginning starts with a B and Creation starts with a C. Why would the Bible start with the second letter in the alphabet? Because 0 & 1 are the code for the computer or the genetic code. Off and on switches.

The third word in the Bible is God or Elohim. The Hebrew people believe the name of God is to holy to say out loud. So we know in the beginning of creation was God, He was in the beginning and He was the beginning. John 1 1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." This is why they say the Hebrew language is the language God uses to create the universe. Some people say that DNA is the language of God and the language that God uses to create life.

Do we understand these first three words in the Bible? Not really but it is clear that the rest of the Bible explains the meaning of these words to us so we can lean about God and His creation.

Last time I read the bible it started, "In the beginning God..." God is the fourth word and beginning is the third.

I am talking about the Hebrew Bible, not the translation.

Sorry, I don't read the Hebrew Bible as I'm not Hebrew preferring to read from English translations as I'm American and prefer my vernacular.
I mostly use Biblehub dot com. Then I click on the link that says Hebrew. That way I can look at the original Hebrew word and I can look at the different verses that word is used in or the different words they use to translate that word into English. When I am searching for a verse I have to type in Bible anyways. So it is no big deal to type in Biblehub so I go to that web site to study the Bible.

I'm not much of a digital bible reader preferring paper and ink. That goes for the majority of my reading to be honest.

I have a few books, such as R.A. Salvatore's first book in the Drizzt series called Homeland and several of the books following, along with the Lord of the Rings as it was a free gift that my girlfriend sent me through Amazon.

I have these on Kindle as I can read them at work while sitting waiting on a call to pickup a patient or driving to pickup a patient.

I went out to my town to talk to some homeless people and I don't know, most of them I felt like I did not care. I would be talking to them and it just goes out of the ear. Did meet this one guy who is great though, he said used to follow God and I could tell.

They wear out pretty quick. The most you can read the Bible is twice before you have to replace it. The computer is a lot faster to look up all the scriptures that use the same Hebrew word if you want to study the context for the meaning of a word. It is more than annoying when the pages start to fall out.

I've been getting used theology books and find it amazing that some of the best books on methology of interpretation are having to be taped together to be able to read again.

I don't know. All I know is that I love Christ!
I ask because it is very important to understand that unless you are born again, you will not possess the Spirit. The Spirit is what you must have in order to discern the scriptures. The Spirit also loves the word which contains the revelation of Jesus the Christ. So when I hear someone say that they find reading the bible boring I wonder two things; 1 – are they born again and 2 – if they are born again, what is it that is quenching the Spirit from flowing in this area?
We can earnestly love Christ and still not be born again. But it is the Spirit in us that loves Him - the way He calls us to love Him and brings us into all truth.

Please understand my intent is to perhaps shed some light in your quandary. You can take all the very well-meaning tips and helps to get you into reading or listening to the Bible, but if the Spirit is not involved it will only last so long. In fact, you are in the law – which essentially is about working through a to do list. You have reading the bible on your to do list – and it’s causing you some difficulty in achieving it. When the Spirit is in you and working, it is not grievous to do what we are called to do – which is to study the scriptures it is enjoyable – it is our food.

In a recent post on my blog I have written To Be or not To Be – Born Again if you care to read it.

With all due respect, I really don’t believe your problem is how you can get reading the bible and enjoying it at all. I believe it to be a symptom of the problem.

Not sure why yours wear out so quickly. I have my first bible me that my ex-wife gave me back in 2009. Have several bibles that are close to eight years old and varying degrees of age younger than that. I still have yet to throw one out. Other than some slight wear and tear they all look good and are no where near falling apart.

If and when I go to mass, I don't need to bring a bible as the three readings are in the missal.

I don't write in mine and am careful with them like I am with all books as I cannot afford to just go and get another.

Let the bible read you!

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart (Hebrews 4:12)

I have a downloaded YouVersion of the Bible on my computer. Some of the versions are audible and can be listened to while I'm doing something else like knitting or cooking supper.
