  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

#YaleWhileBlack: White woman calls police on Black grad student for napping in dorm
Black Yale teaching fellow Lolade Siyonbola says her white neighbor took the extreme measure of calling the police when she fell asleep in the common area of the building where they both live.

Siyonbola uploaded two videos to Facebook. One showed the neighbor filming her and telling Siyonbola that the common room is not for sleeping. The other video was of her interaction with police once they arrived.

I guess we should add sleeping to the list of unapproved activities.

I'm beginning to picture America as a country where cops spend their lives micro-managing citizens -checking on someone napping in a dorm, making sure a person buying a packet of mentos isn't stealing them, ensuring people buying bottled water don't have alcohol (remember that one?)....

Do they seriously have nothing better to do?

Sounds like college pettiness for those who haven't matured enough to actually be in college yet. Clearly sounds like these two don't get along!
Maybe they don't get along but that was a funky way to treat someone.

All schools have troublemakers unfortunately. This woman just sounds like one of those tattle tales who likes to get people in trouble and stir up drama. The article mentions she tried to get someone in trouble months before for getting lost. Since the student was sleeping where she wasn't supposed to be, I'm not surprised she called to report that too then. It's annoying, but then again a lot of people are annoying.

Considering it's late-April/early-May it should be of no surprise to find students falling asleep in lounges. It's finals time, it's stressful enough having to prepare for exams, it seems worse to now have to deal with people using the police as a tool of harassment.

No, but when a Helpful Citizen calls them up to deal with some trivial incident, they can't ignore it. And then they have to follow the routine.

Why not - plenty of low-key crime gets ignored all the time by police. Assuming this report was "strange person sleeping in my dorm", the police could well have ignored it in favour of other things more worthy of their attention.

Black graduate student falls asleep in dorm. The police were called.

There is a certain delicious irony in the headline above. The word dorm, short for dormitory, is derived from the Latin word "dormire" meaning to sleep.

Not at my department. Dispatch is not allowed to field calls anymore, which means we have to respond to everything.

I read about this this morning. Apparently the student who called the police has mental issues & knew darn well that the grad student who was napping lived in that dorm. From the sounds of it the police did stay there too long, but I don't think they were out of bounds for responding to the call or verifying that the student was a resident. The fault lies in the student who called them which is why I'm called Yale has reprimanded that person.

I don't find that the police did anything wrong - it's their job to respond to all calls, even if they find them silly - but agree the blame lies with the student who called. If she has mental issues and calls the police often, that may be another reason she did it. Annoying but....well, there are annoying people out there.

Mental issues? That is no excuse. How many people with mental issues are in jail? Tsk! She did wrong! She should suffer consequences mental or no.

? There is not a law against calling the police. Why would she be in jail?
