I don't like it. Besides the fact that one should not face potentially negative ramifications for calling 911 unless it is just obvious it's abusing the number--who is seriously going to sue someone for $250? What attorney would take up that case?

Black lawmakers creating a law that is specifically meant to target people who are white. Sounds like a racially motivated move on the part of the lawmakers. The only result would be to intimidate people from calling the police when they see someone doing something they think is wrong, and only if the person observed is black and the caller is white.

the people who are calling in the police on minorities going about regular legal day to day activities are the ones abusing the system. frankly they should be jailed.

its because calling the police on a person minding their own business is 1 harassment of that person and 2 a waste of the police’s time which does cost the city money and 3could endanger someone else. Yeah fine ‘em

Not necessarily. Not if people DIE because calling 911 now exposes you to personal liability.

I have called the police on people, and one of the first things they ask is for your driver's license. Even as it is, if you report a crime, there is a high probability YOU will get investigated. 911 callers have not just been arrested before, but shot by police (white people included).

And I've got news for you: if you successfully foil a crime attempt because the police stopped and talked to them before it happened, they ALL were just "minding their own business". "Hello officer. I was just walking in this white neighborhood to see if it was a good place to walk my dog, when...I happened upon this house that had the front door unlocked."

you obviously haven’t been subjected to this type of coercive mistreatment. There is not one black person who hasn’t been harassed like that even if they don’t call the police . They’re starting to really do this to middle Eastern people and Hispanics . We’re sick of it and you know what they say about being sick and tired of being sick and tired

In my town there was a woman (she is in a nursing home now) who would call 911 up to a dozen or more times a day over the most trivial thing. Even court orders didn't work. A judge eventually issued a court order that removed her from 911 phone service.

It seems to be a real problem. However not all problems can be solved by creating another crime. I think this could have unintended consequences.

From what I've been told by police, it's not illegal to call them and they have to follow-up on calls. That's what I was told by them when someone kept calling them about me multiple times for sitting on my front porch or looking out my window or being out in my yard. I even reported her to her landlord and he said he wouldn't tell her to stop doing it. He did seem to find a way to get her to move and tighten his requirements on who he rents to though. :)

if they weren’t committing a crime then they were just minding their own business .

if you chronically wasted the time of the police like that you could be arrested in nyc . Even the phone company will prosecute you if you misuse their system to harass someone so I’m not sure I believe your story or that officer told you something he misunderstood

Well, there were always two of them each time they came to my house. Just from the way they interacted with me indicated they weren't buying this woman's accusations. I told them that she keeps calling them and making accusations against me because she sees that they keep responding by coming to my house. I asked why they keep coming if they know she's doing this and they said that when they get calls, they have to follow up on them. I asked what I can do, and they said to just keep doing whatever I'm doing.
I can see their position in a way. One day, I might have actually done something, and they couldn't just ignore her call or else they'd get in big trouble. It would be all over the news that a woman called police but were ignored, and then found dead/raped/injured/or whatever afterwards.

Somehow making racially motivated phone calls to 911 it is assumed that the caller is always white, thus this is a "law to protect black people." All people are protected by the law; it just so happens that when it comes to nonsense phone calls that target an innocent person, it is often a person of color. When a congresswoman gets stopped while canvassing in her own district, there is a problem, and it lies with the callers.

I would think it's already a crime. And authorities can figure it out and at least deal with ones who are so obvious they can't get out of it.

Where the heck do you live where they do that? I've never once had them ask for my DL.

Hmm... Maybe the folks complaining about this are the racists.

Lawmakers are dealing with a real problem of racist abuse of the 911 system and responded with an attempt to fix it.

If the events weren't occurring they would not need to do so.

No one is going to be punished for calling the police when there is actually a reason to.
