1. Enoch is mentioned in Genesis 4:17. I would like to read the book of Enoch to get an idea of what that time in history was like.
2. Not sure what it means with God's decree about 120 years. Can't be generations... can it? I know their generations were very long lived, and our generations today are like 25-30 years.
3. The water prevailed over the earth for nearly 5 months!! I can't even imagine that...

Exciting tale of joshua..

The trumpets at jericho remind me of the coming of the Lord with the sound of trumpets and the shouting. Also that Jesus will avenge the wicked on the appointed day.

Wonder what the babylonish garment looked like. How many christians fall from grace through coveting worldly goods?

I don't have much to say on this one other than unfortunately this section of the Bible is one of those things that put off unbelievers when it comes to their impression of God and His character, due to the instances of the Isrealites being commanded to take down and destroy cities such as Jericho and Ai that are in their way. If one does not yet have a personal relationship with the Lord, then taking sections like this by themselves would naturally give them the impression that we follow a bloodthirsty God who just has us making war on and trampling anyone we find in our way, even going so far as to slay women and children who do not or cannot fight back. For me, this is a real delicate part that you need to really dig into and ask God on your own, honestly and to your satisfaction, what is His purpose here, because like many parts of Scripture, there is no doubt more going on here than meets the eye. I have heard it that pretty much every part of the OT involving the Israelites eliminating entire nations of people it is for their own good, drastic a measure as it may be, to preserve their purity such that the prophecies of a coming Messiah being descended from Israel would come true. And of course along with that, God did not want the pagan ways of foreign peoples corrupting His own, as what ends up happening many a time. If I remember correctly, there was even a part of the OT (sorry, I do not remember where or what pagan nation was being spoken of in particular) in which God seemed quite aghast to find that the Israelites had taken to worshipping a god named Molech and were actually sacrificing their own children in fire to him. It was insane.

I know, I get your meaning. Take note in chapter 10 that the Bible mentions the book of Jasher. Read that one to gain an idea (much like Enoch) of the history of what went on then. I fully believe that God was only fighting for justice and righteousness. Any evil He sees He clearly uproots, there's hardly any mercy, however Rahab hid the messengers, so her and her family were spared - that's mercy! Clearly we see in chapters 6-10 His righteous judgement upon the wicked. This actually reminds me of His second coming.

I was thinking about the book of Joshua and how most people quote the verse that says 'As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord' because Joshua was asking the israelites to choose on that day who they will serve. Good or evil? That battle has been going on in the spiritual realm and goes on today. We are not fighting flesh and blood, but powers and prinicpalities, our weapons are not carnal ones of war but of truth. What the israelites had to go through in their time is a spiritual truth for us we still need to clear out our souls to claim the promised land. We have to put to death our flesh and decide which way to walk - flesh or spirit?

It is a battle. Anyone who thinks the christian walk is a walk in the park, well they are kidding themselves. But even though we are soldiers, victory is assured, because Jesus has won and good will prevail.

It is obvious already in Psalms that King David - while a man who has committed great sin like the rest of us - is also a man of much prayer and constant praise toward God. The psalms here today are generally David's praise to God for having sheltered him in the past from those who would see him destroyed, and his earnest petition to God to continue to protect him from his enemies in the future.

Even in Psalm 3, amazingly King David is still praising God and showing trust in Him for his well-being and deliverance at a time when David's very own son Absalom has turned against him. That kind of scenario would be enough to break many men and cause them to despair, but David does not let even this keep him from trusting in God. We should all be so courageous in times of trouble. :)

If you have a cancer, you want every ounce of it expunged, otherwise, there's a chance of it coming back. This is simple, pure military tactics. It is also simple, pure spiritual tactics.

Let any of these people live, and they would have:

1. wanted revenge
2. wanted to honor the memory of their forefathers
3. wanted to continue their evil practices, aka "culture"
4. gotten some Israelites to side with them out of sympathy, thereby encouraging them to do the above
5. turned some of the people of God away from following Him

This is exactly what was to happen later on with other peoples/cities and look what happened.

Bottom line is ... do what God tells you to do, and don't think you are more humane than He is. Don't think you know better than He does. Don't think you are kinder than Him. Don't think you have more vision than He does, because He can see things down the road that we can't. His plan is better than ours.

I have absolutely no recommendations to give to God on this matter. I wouldn't change a thing.

Psalms..

I like how david says he meditates on his bed at night about God. You can picture him pouring out his lament and weeping on his pillow, but also quietly trusting that he WILL live to see another day..Gods mercies are new each morning.

David is also not afraid to mention that God will avenge his enemies, after all, He has the power. But they are not just davids enemies but Gods enemies, for they speak lies and falsehoods and do not honor Him.

In kJV God is referred to as the LORD, I notice its differrent in other versions he is called Jehovah or Yahweh.

Poor Job!

But I do think Eliphaz has some good points, otherwise he wouldnt say anything.
Also i may have read a bit further, but what he says reminds me of what Mary sang in her magnificat..the song she sang upn hearing she is pregnant with Jesus.

To me it appears that at some point between chapters 2 and 3 Job was beginning to lose his resolve and lean towards blaming God for his misfortunes. But I could be wrong. It just seems that, in chapter 2, while Job did in fact grieve, he still adamantly had this attitude of "the Lord's will be done, whatever that may mean for me". But now he has turned to cursing ever having been born at all, or that even going to the grave would be preferable to the misery he experiences over his losses. It just seems that in chapter 2 Job was still determined to live and see this through in the midst of his grieving, but in 3 he begins to sound like he is contemplating giving up completely, as though his wishes for death and the cursing of his day of birth is hyperbole on the verge of being intended as literal.

Eliphaz in chapter 4 appears to be reminding us that, even if Job's misfortune was brought about directly from God Himself, none of us are innocent before His perfect holiness, so if we are indeed being judged when disaster strikes, it may be our due consequence for our guilt as it measures up to God's standards. Which should only remind us to be all the more thankful for Christ's having taken on our guilt at the cross that we may be considered innocent before God.:)
