I have attended a Baptist church for most of my life. They don't use gym books, but words projected onto a wall to sing along. I can't recall a time where we had sang that hymn in particular.

Oh, so you're one of those contemporary types when it comes to church music. You and your worldly old projector on the wall sing-alongs instead of doing it right by reading out of hymnals. =P

Does anyone else here attend a Baptist church? That is my home church in Magnolia, Arkansas right now. And I noticed in the last verse of Psalm 8 that that is where we no doubt got the hymn "How Majestic is Your Name", which is one I have played through on the viola a few times at church. I don't know if other denominations have that hymn in their books, though. I never sang it in the presbyterian church, anyway.
Scripture in song, a ministry started by nz couple, used that psalm in their song.
I dont know what denom they were, but they were popular among all denoms.
I go to a baptist church and many hymns reference the psalms.

Lol I wouldn't say that's my doing. ;)
Thats not to say I haven't sang from a hymn book before, I have visited other churches :p

Good. Then you won't go to hell for being entirely worldly like all those modern hymn-singers, since you've done it the traditional way before. =P

(To clarify, I am just taking a jab at the "crazy" kind of Christians who see evil around every corner and condemn you to hell even for little things like how you sing in your church. ^_^)

I once attended a 'crazy' christian church to see what it was like.
They were all singing out of hymn books and saluting the national flag...there weren't many people in that church..but I did feel if I wasn't wearing a long skirt that they might have thought I was satan's spawn.

I do remember one song though.
it was called 'I love the Bible'

They sang 'I love the Bible' 3x
then 'It is the Word of God' actually it was quite cute. But it wasn't in the hymn book. They had it on rolls of paper like how they used to do it in my school all handwritten in large felt pen and someone pointing to the words. ;-)

I'm sorry to hear that, Sheena. For what it is worth, you know that by now I would not have hesitated to come take care of you were I not literally 1500+ miles away from you.

On today's reading, however, I fear that I do not really have any insight, and I made no particular observations. The tone and intent here on both Job's and Eliphaz's words does not appear to have changed since chapters 3 and 4. Perhaps someone else has taken note of something I have not?

Well, I dont really like reading Job because he complains all the time. Eliphaz has given him good advice, but Job just wants to wallow in self pity. He also insists he is righteous, doesnt want to admit hes a sinner.
Eliphaz is telling him as a friend would do that Job needs to seek God, for answers but Job just wants to feel sorry for himself. Its like woe is me!

Then Job lashes out at his friend. Well it might have been better for Eliphaz to just give him a hug. But when someone is like that, they really dont want hugs from people...and im sure eliphaz didnt want to hug Job when hes like that.

Job 5:19
Personally, I know this one.

Job 15:17-24
To someone who follows after the world, this would seem pretty crazy, but to those that believe in God, this is normal. God should be the one we fear, not what falls apart around us or what we come in contact with.

Job 6
All I can say to this is Job's heaviness is serverly understood, and that he wishes for God to cut him asunder so he can finally rest. However, I'm not sure if he's discerning that Satan pushed God's hand in doing this to him.

I think I was a bit like Job when I got depressed.
But when I found out the truth behind it all and that Jesus could redeem me then I had someone to live for after all, not just myself. Sorry, getting ahead here.

It is understood, but Job does seem to be beginning to lose faith here. That may just be me, though. By the end of this book, it is still apparent that God knew Job would ultimately endure, and He would bring about good (even better than what Job had before, in fact, if memory serves me correctly).

I do see Goodbook's points about Job as well, though. And while perhaps oftentimes, when a man has thought it better to see death than to continue living in whatever misery they are currently suffering, it was said in haste and likely not approved of by God, I must say it is still a sad state of affairs when even a normally faithful person like Job wishes instead that God would either put him in the grave or destroy him completely, rather than God let him continue to live.

I think how I understand is that Job is putting his very life in God's hands and kind of like saying "here I am, Lord. Do with me as You will."

That may also be true, Sheena.

And in that case, it actually would be a sign of great faith, to be willing to submit to God's will even if you believe it may involve great suffering and then death.

I think depressed people do think that way, although healthy people would think its mental illness, and they can't just 'buck up' or 'get happy'. It really is being oppressed by the devil, but also there's an element of selfishness that needs to be eliminated. Job is still holding on to pride, or self-righteousness. Imagine a wealthy man like Job losing it all, his health and wealth, everything. But God doesn't just love the healthy and wealthy people. He loves us even when we are sick and poor.
