Sheeesh! Where to begin? and the first was not a "mistake" as much as a dastardly sin. The second was a sin also because it was in the face of gOd that David was not trusting i God, but looking at the "might of men".

Two things come to mind:

When David blatantly decided to set up Bathsheba's husband Uriah, a loyal, and mighty man in David's army, after his adultery with Bathsheba, and cold-blooded-ly sent him out to be killed.

The other was when David took the census.
