  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I love to bring up the fact that scientists can't build a machine that can do this:

2 Kings 6:17 And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

... and therefore doesn't have a right to trespass into the divine.
No but we can build a machine that does this: Dailymotion - Russian Tsar Hydrogen Bomb Explosion - a Tech & Science video

No, we don't claim the 'imaginary' is above empirical evidences.

We claim the 'divine' is above empirical evidences.

Empirical evidence is between the imaginary and the divine:

  1. Realm of the divine: Heaven, Kingdom of God
  2. Realm of the empirical: universe
  3. Realm of the imaginary: Santa Claus, Easter bunny, evolution

Okay... Evolution is an exceptionally sound theory.
And even so, you DO reject reality around you. You think the world was created 6000 years ago, so then everything we can gather to the contrary must be wrong. You reveal a poor - at best - understanding of basic (if complex) scientific principles. For example the

Er, the orbits of planets haven't been a mystery in years and years.

Sure, and never once have I fallen back to a "magic man done it" answer.

Some religious people find the things we cannot explain as evidence that a supernatural being did it. Some do not.

Not at all -- God is much, much bigger than science.
lol. FAIL, AV. Science simply explains God's creation. Reveals it's inner workings. It is quite tragic the way you mock it and Him by your arrogant hubris, thinking your own opinions grander than the observable reality around us. You're like an LSD junkie thinking he can fly, rejecting gravity because it doesn't fit into his delusional hallucinations.

Do that? No problem.
300px-LSD_2D%2C_3D.png

It's not even a machine.

... and therefore doesn't have a right to trespass into the divine.

What does that mean AV? We are not divine, but we can and are analyzing and using God's creation ever better. Much of what we can do now would be considered magic or divine by our ancestors. Does it make it so?
No.
God is so far above us intellectually and in all other areas it baffles me to think anyone could possibly even pretend to know something with as much certainty as you claim to have.
Why do you want to make Christianity into this heap of fallacies and fear of what IS AV? Isn't it supposed to be about love and compassion?

You may ponder one night, looking up at the stars, watching them and the moon move from point to point in the dark skies and consider the planets, those that we know of, and also those that may be beyond, and wonder what is holding it all in place, and why, and you may consider that there may be other life out there, somewhere, who knows. Haven't you ever wondered.

Why does God's existence depend on unknowns? Does His existence or likelihood diminish the more we know? I don't think so. I know creationists want us to think so, but it doesn't make much sense to me. God is God. No matter what we find out He'll be there, even if we can manage to find a unifying theory and a perfect mathematical explanation for every phenomenon in this universe it does not invalidate Him. The fall of geocentrism didn't. The discovery of evolution didn't. It only has done so in the minds of a few who fear what reality is, those who would cover their eyes and ears, shouting in panic at new revelations which do not fit their opinions.

I do not need to see what is under my car's hood to ascertain that there is an engine.
I can conclude to an extremely accurate degree the type of engine, power output, consumption, efficiency, etc. of the engine just by taking measurements, make observations and calculations and test runs.

The problem with creationists is that they like to enjoy the fruits of science but at the same time dismiss science altogether by claiming the imaginary as being above empirical evidences.

This is basically IMHO a very hypocritical stance since most if not all creationists will seek medical help if faced with a serious medical condition while at the same time by dismissing evolution they are in effect dismissing biology, biochemistry, and eventually medicine itself. Biology makes absolutely no sense without the Theory of Evolution.

Just like Jesus once said: "Hypocrites and Pharisees"!

Science is GREAT I love it . It demonstrates that we are superior beings, in that we want to understand how things work, and work out how these things work, and why these things work. But as you yourself point out, these things do work, and they work even before we start scientifically proving them to work. Do you get the picture?

I don't need science to demonstrate how superior I am -- I already know:

Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

Actually you have just given a partially accurate description of what science is; It is a tool that furthers our understanding and knowledge of all that is contained in the universe.

However, I need to impress upon you the fact that the knowledge acquired helps us to manipulate our world to suit our needs rather than just wait till something changes.

We do not wait to see if a disease will kill us or not; We study the disease and apply that knowledge to find a cure or better a prevention.

Cars do not happen by themselves. We build them from the scientific knowledge we have acquired.

See what I mean?

Yes ! Yes ! I do !

And when we use this wonderful gifted ability to create such inventions for good and not for evil, we then demonstrate our means for love and not for destruction. Although the reverse may also apply, nonetheless the important thing is that it is for the good, and not for bad, so long as we uphold it that way.

What is your dream experiment?
Something psychological. I'd put newborn creatures in dark pits with no stimuli, except the occasional food and water, and see what happens.

Oh, wait, someone beat me to it.

Horrific :(

But what I'd really like to do is work on large-scale quantum effects, or quantum tunnelling.
And I'd also love to run paranormal experiments on the weekends :)

Okay, so say there is going to be a blizzard later tonight.

Let's also say that there is someone who is the laziest person on the face of the planet.

What would happened if this person doused his driveway and sidewalks with like 5 gallons of gasoline right now.

Then, after the foot of snowfall, he then would go outside and light it all on fire to avoid shoveling.

In theory, is this possible?

Oh, and as always, please don't report me. :)

With Gas, I thought it was the fumes that were explosive, vs the liquid itself.
(Though I might be wrong on that)

Three cheers for science

Science serves to prove that when you are dead you are always dead, right?

( no... more.... life......! lights out ! )

But God serves to prove that when you are dead you are always alive. Right !
