  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

As for badtim's comment, I think he was just pointing out that the feeling you ("I'm still alive....!......I....Feel......GREAT !........") is the same feeling people experience by taking LSD.

I have taken LSD and yes, it can provoke a serious religious ecstatic experience; actually there's studies of just this thing, from before the federal govt made it illegal. Can also provide an atmosphere where one can have enlightening conversations about the flavor of red, provided that you have an intelligent doorknob to talk to!

though actually i was just teasing him a bit :)

ok so here's a serious question (or two):

what's your current opinion on the monopolar quasiparticle observation reported by Morris & Tennant (Science, 2009)?
Fascinated, as a true monopole would upheave our understanding of particle physics - by all accounts, monopoles shouldn't exist :p But, of course, as 'quasiparticles', they're not really true monopoles, so the Standard Model can sleep another day!

oh and about the lack of blurring in Hubble Deep Field images
Well, there shouldn't be any blurring, as there's no atmosphere to speak of in deep space. Besides an infinitesimally thin plasma, interstellar space is (conventionally) empty - it's only when starlight hits the Earth's atmosphere that blurring occurs.

well hmm, i've always been under the impression that monopoles would be consistent with Dirac's idea of quantized charges, but hey, us laypeople :)

nah, not optical blurring, planck scale spacetime fluctuations (Lieu & Hillman, 2003) - though Ng et al (2003) maintain that Lieu overestimated the possible effect by a huge amount (10^15 - 10^30).

and this is why i'm relearning math :p

Magnetic monopoles don't exist in the Standard Model; there's simply no particle in the Model that is a magnetic monopole, as usually defined. Though hypothetical extensions have been proposed to account for them if they turn out to exist, there's no real evidence that they do.

I would agree with Ng et al: the effects of the quantum foam would be phenomenally small, even over such vast distances.

and this is why i'm relearning math :p
Maths always gets two thumbs up from WC :thumbsup:

Tell me, what is going to happen after you die, because it's obvious that you are still alive.
Indeed, and I've already stated what we know about death (namely, the physical body rots, and the mind ceases to exist).

But you keep avoiding my question. Do you, or do you not, know what happens after death?

I know that the physical body perishes. I hope that this answer is sufficient for you.

Perhaps. What, then, did you mean by, "But God serves to prove that when you are dead you are always alive. Right !"?

I'm not trying to trick you out, I just don't understand what you meant by that comment :)

I have an N800 internet tablet.
04_n800_lowres.jpg

It has a BP-5L Li-Po 1500 mAh Battery inside it.

Anyway, I use it all the time when I'm taking a pink bubble bath. No judgments please. :)

I usually have it plugged in to my wall charger.

What would happen if this slipped out of my hands by accident and fell into the tub?

Both while being plugged into a wall socket and also while it's not.

I just realized that I don't want to die. :)

The device probably wouldn't fare too well; the display would most likely go peculiar as water crept into its nether regions.

But would you be electrocuted? No, the electrics are generally small and the water too poorly conducting. If you dropped an old-fashioned electric toaster in, or anything with an electric heating element that must necessarily be exposed to the air (or, if submerged, water), then you'll go boom.

So you'd be fine... but the device wouldn't.

HOWEVER don't do it anyway, as I'll probably turn out wrong :p

The circuit breaker will trip and or the Earth trip (depending on which is the faster). Either way the chances are that you will survive!

As for the pink bubble bath? You will not survive that if the word gets out ^_^^_^^_^^_^
