"The Church in The British Isles will only begin to grow when She begins to again venerate Her own Saints"
(Saint Arsenios of Paros †1877)

Part of that beauty present with Ireland can be seen with how the environment enhanced their worship (and loving how God made the environment as a fragile but beautiful thing meant to glorify Him and be stewarded by his people to show Him, I truly appreciated how holistic Irish worship of God was .... and reflecting His care for the world he made). I am reminded of Street Trees....

As said best elsewhere:

The cultural, religious, medical and agricultural vacuum that followed the collapse of The Holy Roman Empire led directly to the establishment of independent, self-sufficient catholic monasteries. The dominant monastic culture came directly from Britain, specifically Columban Ireland: wandering monks became missionaries and gained followers wherever they went. Over the next several hundred years, monasteries religiously re-defined and enlarged the old boundaries of the Western Holy Roman empire. Using papal authority and religious piety they became the centers of peace and culture in Europe. Un-walled and undefended because of their religious shield many of them, particularly in Britain (with 500 monasteries), housed thousands of individuals and persisted for almost a thousand years, until 1538 when Henry VIII ordered the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The first western European monasteries, not surprisingly, started in Ireland with native Celtic Irish.

In addition to the famous monastic scriptoriums, vineyards, and fermenting of wine and brewing of beer, this era brought the less well known Cloister Gardens. At first they were believed to be a simple square grass panel location with a fountain; over time they evolved into fully fledged gardens. The plan of St. Gall Monastery (816-836 AD) is an idealized view of the buildings and gardens of a monastery. The plan shows separate spaces for the following gardens: medical herb, vegetable, orchard, and two separate Cloisters. A later (1165) plan of another monastery in England, St. Augustine’s Abbey in Canterbury, also shows gardens, vineyards, orchards, and an irrigation system.

I have not come across any Celtic Orthodox people who could convince me that they possessed any sort of valid Celtic apostolic succession, or that they were actually Orthodox according to doctrine.

Hello, Xenophon, and so glad you found us! Welcome to CF, and to TAW! :)

I have not come across any Celtic Orthodox people who could convince me that they possessed any sort of valid Celtic apostolic succession, or that they were actually Orthodox according to doctrine.
Forgive me, if it's not Fr. Seraphim we were discussing mist recently that you mean by this.

But if it is, it's not a matter of apostolic succession there. Fr. Seraphim is seeking to build a monastery in the Celtic Isles, while pointing out that there hasn't been one in many centuries. I'm not sure where all he himself is from - he was recently talking about being part of a monastery in Moldavia at one point.

It seems the desire is to bring Orthodoxy TO the Celtic Isles.

I know very little about the previous Orthodox there, St. Columba, St. Iona, and so on, so I'm not at all commenting on that.

I was referring to certain self identified "Celtic Orthodox" vagante jurisdictions.

Ah, ok. I don't know anything about that.

I do know one convert priest in the US who would like to be associated with any Celtic group if one becomes established, but he is not part of what you mention, I suppose. His bishop is canonical, and in Alaska, I believe.

Thanks for clarifying. :)

I have no problems with Orthodox converts of Celtic extraction wishing to get in touch with their pre-Schism roots. :)

Is calling it Celt misleading, only a small part of the Irish were Celts (relly celto Iberian) The Gaels--The really celts made up Gaul, Austria, Bavaria and transaplpine Gaul.
Good point....

Speaking of which, GxG, he just put up two more podcasts. I really like both of them, but the one on Confession is particularly good, IMO. :)
You'd probably like this...

Thank you. It's interesting to see a Church being put together from early stages. :)

To be honest, though, while I am very interested in history, and Saints from other lands, and so forth, I'm not that big a fan of ethnicity being overlaid onto faith. I'm not saying the video is a problem (though I'm not sure national flags within the nave are appropriate?), but it's just not a focus of mine.

I particularly like many of the podcasts in "Through a Monk's Eyes" because Fr. Seraphim tends to get much more personal, practical, and give concrete examples of spiritual things than I have been able to commonly find. And maybe I'm a tad slow on the uptake or something, but I tend to benefit by hearing very specific ideas of actual little techniques, whether in prayer, or confession, or whatever. I may use them, or not, or adapt them, but having them suggested is a tremendous benefit to me. Maybe I am alone in that. :)

It makes a difference seeing the way that the history plays out....

Much nonsense is peddled under the name of "Celtic" Christianity.

But it is true that the island churches--English, British, and Irish--of the period 400-1020 are inspiring for their monastic zeal, their love of learning, their devotion to evangelism, their diligence in writing the Scriptures and other works in manuscript, their love of music, and their poetry.
