I think her family put it into her head that she'd been discriminated against.

I believe I read in one of the links provided that her lawyer recruited her, and IIRC, had some outside backing, so it would seem that someone wanted to push a case like hers and found in her a willing plaintiff.

Ah...the "can't argue facts, so argue whether the facts exist" tactic, a favorite among internet commentators.

Justice Dept. to Take On Affirmative Action in College Admissions
Ringo

You will have to do better than this vacuous rhetoric.

Resorting to a mischaracterization of my questions to you is petty.

The phrase "a favorite among internet commentators" is condescending.

You are not superior to me, stop acting as you are with your condescension. You want to display you are some debate god of the internet, then abstain from the mischaracterization and condescension. Or did you desire to lump yourself into the same category of deplorables as myself?

Let's look at the facts. Let's begin with your posts, inundated with rhetoric, short on facts.

Post 168: "* American = narrowly defined by what I consider to be American, which is usually white, straight, middle-class, and Protestant.

** "Discriminatory" Affirmative Action = 'white people losing their monopoly on political and social power'."
The above are not facts but your opinion, an idea, a belief you have about reality.

Post 164 "It really says something about certain people when they see minorities having a chance to go to school to better themselves as """racism""" against them.

It - it's almost like....equality isn't a zero-sum game and that more rights going to minorities doesn't mean that "whites" are under attack.

Post number 164 was made in regards to a post discussing Ms. Fisher's lawsuit against UT. Post 164 is not a recitation to facts. Instead, post number 164 is your spin. Post 164 is your interpretation, a misinterpretation, of Fisher's lawsuit and legal claims.

Post 175: I'm addressing those who think that affirmative action is somehow "reverse racism" against white people.
This is not a recitation to any facts, except for the fact you provided a reply to my answer but the substance of the answer has not been established to be factual instead of a hypothetical of if someone exists holding the view you mentioned, then you are addressing them.

Your posts in this thread are meritorious for lacking facts.

But go ahead and post another snarky, condescending post about a lack of facts when your posts are conspicuously devoid of facts.

Let's see. In post number 175 the people you said you were addressing were those who think affirmative action is "reverse racism." I asked who these "people" were and you articulated the condescending beauty in post number 181. So, linking post 175 to 181 above, Your two posts suffers from:

1. Lack of facts properly defining the phrase "reverse racism." As Socrates so famously noted, "The beginning of wisdom is the definition of terms."

I heard or read somewhere once that failure to properly define terms is a "tactic, favorite among internet commentators." Such a tactic is preferred as this permits the person to have a malleable argument, an argument they can morph and change by defining the words or phrases in response to criticisms.

But Wikipedia defined the phrase as:

" a concept that portrays affirmative action in the United States and similar color-conscious programs as a form of anti-white racism on the part of black people and government agencies..."
Oxford dictionary says:

Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism on the basis of race directed against a member of a dominant or privileged racial group.

The link you provided is not evidence the Justice Dept. adheres to the view affirmative action is "reverse racism."

The Justice Dept. “investigations and possible litigation related to intentional race-based discrimination in college and university admissions,” is not a declaration of "reverse racism" or a claim, allegation, or manifesto pertaining to "reverse racism."

So desperate to avoid discussing the issue at hand that you're simultaneously rules lawyering about "Socratic definitions" and whining about how mean and "condescending" I'm supposedly being to others in this thread. It's really weak sauce.

We all know that a certain segment of the population voted for this president because they considered the fact that there were more brown people in this country - and with political power - to be ""white genocide"" and somehow an "attack on whiteness". Affirmative action has been a target of conservative lawmakers for years now because they think that giving minorities a chance to go to college is discrimination.

You can continue to make Ringo84 a topic for debate in this thread, but I assure you....I'm not that interesting a subject.

No, you did not. There are NO facts in the article showing Fisher was denied entry because of her mediocre grades/test scores.

Even the school officials cited in the article say nothing to show Fisher was denied because of mediocre grades/test score. In fact, the school officials cited in the article do not say she was denied because of mediocre grades/test scores.

No facts in the article support your claim. None. Zero. Read the article again.

Lol. Nope, I got things correct, but continue to consume your time writing out lengthy posts that actually don't refute the facts if it suits yourself.

The “weak sauce” has been your posts, which are devoid of any facts, despite the fact you accuse others of not discussing the facts. Well, you’ve presented no facts to discuss in those post I reference and cited to in a preceding post.

Then in an ultimately futile effort to give the appearance of some cogent point, you cite to a link in which the DOJ is contemplating investigating and possible litigation into “intentional race based discrimination” at colleges and universities as evidence of “reverse racism.” However, given the meaning of “reverse racism,” which you failed to define, the information at the link doesn’t support any notion of “reverse racism” on behalf of the DOJ. Investigation and possible litigation of colleges and universities engaged in “intentional race based discrimination” is not the equivalent of processing or evincing a belief in “reverse racism.”

To compound your Greek tragedy of errors, you resort to a Strawman argument. ”Affirmative action has been a target of conservative lawmakers for years now because they think that giving minorities a chance to go to college is discrimination.”

Nope. I’m not aware of any conservative adhering to the view of “giving minorities a chance to go to college is discrimination.”

Your posts have no facts to discuss. Your posts have no lucid, cogent argument to address.

But humor us with more posts about the necessity to discuss facts while your own posts are conspicusly devoid of facts.

"Greek tragedy of errors". Very dramatic. If only you used that apparent talent for wordsmithing to actually address what I said rather than trying desperately to make me an issue.

I really don't know what to tell you. The fact that affirmative action is seen as reverse racism to many conservatives should be obvious to anyone who has been watching American politics for the past say...ten years? Maybe twenty? However long whining about """""political correctness""""" has been in style.

But you don't seem to be willing or able to discuss this, so I guess I'll just move on.

I did, and I'm not. :)

You are wrong. The article doesn’t support the idea her mediocre grades and mediocre test scores kept her from being admitted.

But here is a point the article makes that you will find palatable. Fisher wasn’t denied on the basis of her race and there is insufficient evidence to conclude minorities were accepted as opposed to her on the basis of race, because of race, etcetera.

Lulz. No, I'm not wrong, no matter how many times you feel a need to repeat that. Since I value my time I'm just going to copy & paste what I've already explained to you to economize it. Nope. If that's what you honestly think, then the real problem is with your reading comprehension of my posts.

Are you just trolling me?

Yeah, I know.

You are wrong because there are no facts in the article supporting your assertion Fisher’s mediocre grades were the cause for UT’s denial of her admission.

You aren’t wrong because I said so, you are wrong because the article you cited
doesn’t support your claim.

Even the school officials quoted in the article never said Fisher was denied admission because of her grades.

The article doesn’t have any facts supporting claim. None. Never did.

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the content of their character but the color of their skin in order to get preferential treatment."

I don't recall that line being in MLK's famous speech...and yet today that is what we see.
That nation has not achieved the level noted in Dr. King's dream.

I believe Affirmative action is direct discrimination against non minorities.

Why should I have to keep a ratio in my business of anything, I should be able to hire and fire as I choose.

Keep a higher qualified student or potential employee from being accepted based upon quotas of race?

If a person is talented, and they can benefit my corporation they are hired, simple.

Less government bueracracy, more freedom.

The 60's-70's saw the invention of welfare, more babies less work, feminism, rainbow flag day, save the whales kill the babies (abortion) on and on, a bad thing for America.
Many Blacks would ask why they have to work twice as hard for promotions. Why a greater proportion of their children attend inferior public schools, etc. I appreciate that it is inconvenient to have limitations on your bias playing out in the workplace, but improving the level of equality is not a clean and perfect endeavor.

I like how 75% of the first-year in-state students must be automatically admitted to UT Austin if they're in the top 7% of their HS class. (Soon it'll be the top 6%, back when Abigail Fisher applied you just had to be in the top 10%). The applicants at grossly inferior schools are competing with each other to be at the top of their class, same as how the kids at the privileged schools are. I've seen the difference in my own state between the schools in the poorer & richer areas. In Atlanta there are some extremely nice public schools. Nice, well-maintained buildings, with nicely equipped classrooms, nice cafeterias & not many kids who are going hungry. Quality teachers teaching college-level classes. The schools gives iPads to every kid. Then down in the rural area where I lived for a while, they have a combined middle & high school, and the HS classes are in a trailer out in the parking lot. The trailers had AC that had a mind of its own, either not working at all or blasting full force & loud. It gets to be hot as stew in southern Georgia. They have smelly porta-potties. Old textbooks. No internet. No real cafeteria, just a canteen & picnic tables. On top of that, it was a long drive for most of the kids to get there since it was a sparsely populated area. That's why we ended up going to a Baptist school that had been founded specifically on account of wanting to delay desegregation. The teaching there wasn't the best, but at least it had bathrooms that were indoors & was right up the road.

You've invested your time writing a series of verbose posts intent upon proving that I was wrong. I always replied that you were wrong, & you've now diagrammed how you made that error. I just sat back, watched you spin. You misconstrued that sentence. Missed the point of it entirely. Had you read my other posts, I think you would have realized that, and not built all your posts upon a faulty premise. I guess you're referring to the article titled "It Seems Mediocre Grades, Not Ethnicity, Kept Abigail Fisher out of UT Austin." Read it again & read what I wrote and then maybe you'll figure out what you got wrong, lol.
