It's one of several possibilities ;

God left them to themselves

and

man by default refuses the Gospel thinking it foolish.


"Left to themselves " is indicative of how men act and their innate belief in the powers of human free will and clever reasoning .

Yet it's not the clever or the seekers that get saved .....
