The book of Job also mentions "hypocrites", which Jesus used in Matthew 24 concerning the self righteous Jewish Rulers Jesus went up against.

JESUS VS THE JEWISH RULERS

While the significance of this seemingly pointless detail has been neglected by scholars throughout the centuries, you can be certain that it did not escape the notice of the Pharisees and scribes to which Yeshua was speaking. They thoroughly knew their history and were extremely proud of their heritage.

Yeshua wanted those self-righteous Pharisees to know exactly who he was referring to with this parable. This detail cements the identity of the rich man as the House of Judah, the Jews!.........

a Bible study teacher, teaching on Job, likened Job to one of the self-righteous Pharisees......got any thoughts on that, amigo?

Did his 3 friends ever declare themselves righteous and sinless?
Been awhile since I have read thru Job.....

Anywho, this parable comes to mind:

Luke 18:9
Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
10 "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector
11"The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank You that I am not like other men--extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector.

Job 15:34
For the company of hypocrites [will be] barren,
and fire will consume the tents of bribery.
36:13
"But the hypocrites in heart store up wrath;
They do not cry for help when He binds them
Mat 23:15
`Woe to you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
Because ye go round the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte,
and whenever it may happen -- ye make him a son of gehenna twofold more than yourselves.
33 Serpents! brood of vipers!
how may ye escape from the judgment of the gehenna?

What I see as being different between what Jesus said here, and the way that these two friends of Job were saying, is that Jesus was basing his charge of hypocrisy against the Jewish leadership based on their actual behavior, and maybe to a lesser extent on his insight into the human heart, while the first friend especially was extrapolating from the wisdom of the ages to make the inference that Job must be a hypocrite, because the fate meted out by justice to hypocrites has been meted out to Job.

One might say that Jesus was approaching his judgement scientifically, arriving at his conclusion from the facts at hand. Jobs friends were engaging in a reference to authority, without even caring what the actual facts were.

"Aristotle says x", "therefore x". This really is how conclusions were arrived at in the ancient world, even up to medieval times.
(Actually, even in modern times, this kind of appeal to authority is very prominent. "My church says so, therefore it is true" is an acceptable line of argument by many).

With that in mind, we can start to see how radical and revolutionary an ancient text like Job really was, because it flat out states that the three friends, and the "wisdom of the ages" that they base their judgements of Jobs hypocrisy upon simply did not give a true account of Job, nor of God neither for that matter.
With Jesus, any pretense of authority based upon the prestige of ecclesiastical office becomes smashed to smithereens, like the Temple itself, where indeed the fires did consume the tents of bribery.

in this study, he just read Job 1:8...and here is a MAJOR "key" to why God described Job as He did in the beginning of the Book of Job:

The verse is:

"And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?" ~Job 1:8

It's right in line with another verse that comes to mind from Proverbs:

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding." ~Proverbs 9:10

What's the "key"?

Like pieces of a puzzle, here's another one.....just as i was reading Proverbs 3, there it was. This verse: "Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil." ~Proverbs 3:7

How does it fit in with Job you ask? There's a "key" here. The Bible speaks in "patterns"....."key" words and messages are woven thoughout it. They're like Lamp posts that Light the way.....just as it says here in this verse: "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." ~Psalm 119:105

So here we have the "mystery" of the book of Job and all the ensuing confusion and assumptions, placed there not by God, but by man, as demonstrated by Job's "friends", etc.

Yet, in searching His Word like a hungry man for manna (spiritual bread), treasure is found, "keys", if you will, revealed in an on-going intricately woven tapestry of sorts, that begins "In the beginning" and continues till its very last verse, where it ends in Revelation, coming full circle.

And the puzzle (such as the book of Job) is, piece, by piece, by piece, fitted together till a "picture" emerges.......and these pieces of the puzzle are illuminated by "keys" (key words) such as is found in: "Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil." ~Proverbs 3:7

How does this verse tie into the verses mentioned earlier (in post #170)?

the description of the friends Job needed is in the lyrics of this song entitled "Be Ye Glad"

Glad - Be Ye Glad - YouTube
Be Ye Glad

In these days of confused situations
in these nights of a restless remorse
When the heart and the soul of a nation
Lay wounded and cold as a corpse
From the grave of the innocent Adam
Comes a song bringing joy to the sad
Oh, your cry has been heard and the ransom
Has been paid up in full, be ye glad

Oh be ye glad, oh, be ye glad
Every debt that you ever had
Has been paid up in full by the grace of the Lord
Be ye glad, be ye glad, be ye glad

Now from your dungeon a rumor is stirring
You have heard it again and again
Ah, but this time your cell keys they're turning
And outside there are faces of friends
And though your body lay weary from wasting
And your eyes show the sorrow they've had
Oh the love that your heart is now tasting
Has opened the gates, be ye glad
Oh be ye glad, oh, be ye glad
Every debt that you ever had
Has been paid up in full by the grace of the Lord
Be ye glad, be ye glad, be ye glad

So be like lights on the rim of the water
Giving hope in a storm sea of night
Be a refuge amidst the slaughter
Of these fugitives in their flight
For you are timeless and part of a puzzle
You are winsome and young as a lad
And there is no disease or no struggle
That can pull you from God, be ye glad

Oh be ye glad, oh, be ye glad
Every debt that you ever had
Has been paid up in full by the grace of the Lord
Be ye glad, be ye glad, be ye glad

Oh be ye glad, oh, be ye glad
Every debt that you ever had
Has been paid up in full by the grace of the Lord
Be ye glad, be ye glad, be ye glad

...does this verse fit in with the book of Job?

"If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? " ~James 2:15-16

Is so, how, if not, how not so?
