  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Part of the issue is in who is being addressed. Many Christians read themselves into every verse. My assertion is that that is not the correct way to read the Bible. Some of the NT is history; some is instructive to the apostles, and some is didactic teaching aimed at all Christians. Understanding who the audience is is the first step to proper interpretation.
It's ALL ABOUT ME.. haha
Can you recommend a good bible aide or a hermanutics study? I guess I never thought of the NT as history, other than the book of Acts, but even that gets confusing because is the book of ACTS the history of the church (at a point in time) or how it should continue to be (tongues, etc..)?

Yes: Gospel-Centered Hermeneutics: Foundations and Principles of Evangelical Biblical Interpretation (Goldsworthy)

The Gospels also contain a great deal of history, don't they? One of the first steps to proper interpretation is understanding the genre of the text.

There are texts that address all Christians, just Christian leaders, husbands, wives, children, an individual church. . . We stand to learn from all scripture, but not all by direct application. For instance, I don't directly apply "wives submit to your husbands" to myself (since I am a husband) however, I can still see many things about God, wives, husbands, creation, redemption, christ. . . in this teaching. I still find application even in historical texts, but I don't make them prescriptive where there are not.
