  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Can anyone provide an alternative to determinism or non-determinism?

Awhile back while reading about the philosophy of free will, I was deeply struck by the point that any event is either determined by the events before it, or it is random. "Free will" has to fit into that, somehow. This realization has shook me very deeply as it makes the fact that God would...

Do prayers have NO practical effect, since the Father knows the future?

this topic came out in this thread too, here's a related question: Can we pray for shortening the days of the Second Coming? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Do we think that prayers have only a "spiritual" effect...

    Lutheranism and predestination

Hey there. As I understand it Lutherans believe in single predestination, that is, they believe that God has chosen people to be saved but hasn't chosen who's damned. They also believe that Jesus died for the sins of everyone, not just some people. How is it possible for those who are not...

    Quoting Calvin

The ever-ready reply of Calvinists to objections is, "You don't understand Calvinism!" In truth it seems that many opponents understand Calvinism much better than so-called Calvinists. In fact the common objections are well-founded in John Calvin's own words. The only misrepresentation...

Why would we be thrown in the middle of a war?

I do not identify as a Christian. I hardly identify as anything outside of the terminology of "Human Being." With that being said, as a human being I am concerned with the current state of the world and where it is headed. Many people make correlations between the current state of the world and...

    Does Love Require Free Will?

Central to God’s plan and desire for people is that we learn to love. He wants us to love Him, and He wants us to love each other. That love is central to God’s plan is expressed in many ways in Scripture: NIV Matthew 22:37 Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with...

Adam incapable of Perfection; Jesus incapable of Sin?

This is a summary theological statement that I would like to hear critique regarding. Thanks in advance. Statement 1: Adam was incapable of eternal perfection; this is due to the nature of choice / free will; only God is ‘good’ and unless Adam was ‘one’ with God, he would ultimately make a...

How can I reconcile my faith with my recent conclusion that free will is an illusion?

I would request that the answers focus on the reconciliation, rather than arguing that free will does exist. Thanks for your responses :)

Who is in control, us or God...or someone else?

When God gave us free will, did He turn control over to us? Or what about the devil? Jesus Himself referred to satan as “the god of this world.” Psalm 139:2,4 tells us: “You understand my thought afar off…For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether. But...

Judas Iscariot and a question or two about free will

Would Judas be an example of those who will have his part in the lake of fire? It seems obvious but I have wondered if Judas will be saying that he was there with Jesus and has prophesied in His name and have done good works like in Matthew 7:21-23? Would he also be an example of the free will...
