  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Reconsidering Easter Orthodoxy after a very different faith journey

Dear all, I would be very grateful on some advice when it comes to my faith journey, in these for me and all of us hard times. In short, I was raised in Serbia, in a very loving family, with a mixture of cultural Eastern Orthodoxy (icons, holy water, priest blessing the home for Easter) and...

The Catholic Response to "The Church: Towards a Common Vision"

Hello, so a Roman Catholic Friend of mine found this document from the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity to the World Council of Churches. We've talked about it some and we are both rather disturbed by it. It seems to have gone out when the Amazon Synod was taking up most of the...

Life of an Orthodox Christian - A Brief Depiction (Pencils & Prayer Ropes)

A Facebook friend (Father) Barnabas Powell posted this on his Facebook wall. Seems pretty good so far (still watching it)! I really like the artistic style of it. So far it seems like it is a nice little Cliff Notes primer on being Eastern Orthodox.

    Fr. Seraphim's Aramaic Chanting

I've been interested in this priest and his music for a few years since I like chanting and I also like studying the history of hymnography coming from Judaism onward into Christianity. This priest is Assyrian in nationality but at some point became EO. His music does not sound like...

    Legacy of Ben Lomond Crisis

I was curious about what lasting legacy the Ben Lomond Crisis has had. I have some personal interest in that because that church was in my parents backyard so to speak. It was the first Orthodox (or Eastern Church of any kind) that I ever attended. I actually thought seriously about...

    Eastern Orthodox on Contraception

We seemed to have some fun last week when I asked and compared Coptic prayer of the hours to the EO, so I figured I would try something similar on a social issue. Years ago, I got some conflicting information about the Eastern Orthodox take on birth control (in marriage). 1) Before I was...

Question for Eastern Orthodox about the book of life

I’ve recently seen another aspect of Revelation 17:8 that I think is interesting and I’m curious about the EO’s view on this. A person explained to me that the names written in the book of life before creation could be referring to an elect group that was chosen by God who would undoubtedly...

    Prayer of the Hours

How similar is the Coptic Prayers of the Hours to the various EO jurisdictional equivalents? (It's content and structure) Prime Secondly, how similar is the chanting style? http://www.agpeya.org/thanksgivingprayer.mp3 Somewhere in one of my book cases I have this book, but I recall it being...

    Leaven From Heaven?

Hi there! Years ago, I was a member of a church that had it's apostolic succession from the Church of the East (Nestorian Church). I had learned of a curious idiosyncratic belief from the Assyrian Church known as "the Leaven from Heaven". There was a book written in the middle ages...

    Panentheism & Palamite Christianity

I thought the video was an excellent explanation of Panentheism. Panentheism. A Transcendent & Immanent reality. Weak Panentheism. (Palamite Christianity). God is not dependent on man, his divine energies allow us to have our being. Strong Panentheism. - God is dependent on man, for his...

Question on Simony or some related practice

NB: I'm posting this here because I think it may lead to debate. I don't necessarily want one. In another thread that is now locked, a user who is a guest to the EO forum basically accused the EO Church of trading canonical recognition of breakaway EO bodies for 'donation' money. I don't...

    Greetings

Greetings... My name is not important on the internet. However to give some context, I am male, 28 years old and living in Toronto Canada. I have much learning to do, although I have done much learning in life. When I was very young, I learned how to learn rather than how to do x-y-z, and that...

    Recent Convert

Hello, I'm a 37 year old man and after being an atheist for over ten years, I have finally decided to become a Christian. I've continued to learn about atheism and Christianity and after reading Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky, it convinced me to convert. I'm interested in Eastern...

Signed on to see if there are Orthodox Christians interested in starting a Tiny House Community

I am an Orthodox Christian who is testing the waters and interested in seeking God's will in starting a Tiny House community in California for Orthodox Christians. We have the land with utilities, an old farm house and 20 acres and all the free water we can use. It would need tons of work to...
