  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Attorney General Kris Kobach said Jose Ceballos, 54, is a Mexican citizen with legal permanent residency in the United States but is not a citizen. Ceballos was re-elected as mayor this week by residents of Coldwater, a community of 687 people in southwestern Kansas.

Skip Herd, Coldwater city attorney, told Wichita's KWCH-TV that Ceballos, who he said holds a green card, drew "red flags" by applying for permanent citizenship.

“He’s been a registered voter since 1990," Herd told the news station. "He applied for citizenship in February of this year, and through that, raised the issue of whether he was a legal citizen,” Herd said.

“The only way you can discover that a noncitizen is on the voter rolls is if some sort of external information comes to light which indicates that person is not a U.S. citizen,” he said. “In large part, our system right now is based on trust – trust that when the person signs the registration saying he’s a qualified elector or U.S. citizen, that the person is telling the truth. In this case we allege that Mr. Ceballos violated that trust.”

I suggest the AG Kobach focus on Kansas' voter registration process. Other states have methods of verifying citizenship when registering to vote. Then again, he may not be interested in closing any gaps in the Kansas voter registration process.

I’m in two minds about this. On the one hand I think it is imperative that non-citizens in America must be punished but on the other hand I think it’s crazy to punish non-citizens in America.

You can see the bind I’m in.

If a person breaks the law then they should be punished whether they are a citizen or non citizen. Actions have consequences.

Not sure if there would be a practical/simple way of going back and trying to re-validate old voter registrations from 1990. (which is when the article said he registered to vote)

I would imagine a lot of things were being done by hand back then in rural Kansas.

I guess the part that surprises me more is that non-citizens are holding executive elective offices.

Granted it's a small town of less than 700 people. But you'd think that would be the first thing a political opponent would pounce on in an election.

Another job stolen from a law abiding citizen.
If you notice the charge they got him for, it wasn't for running for (or holding) office, it was for voting for himself in the mayoral election.

While I can't find great information on the matter on Kansas laws for various cities, from what I am seeing, there technically is the possibility for cities that have robust "home rule" provisions to elect non-citizens to various public offices provided they have "legal resident" status.

You'd think if a person was going to live here for that long (30 years), and was willing to put in the effort to run for elected office (and win) twice, they would've found the time to fill out some paperwork and take a citizenship test.
